What to Do in an Emergency

Tire Replacement

~7min read

1. Park on a level surface and firmly apply the parking brake.

2. Shift the transmission into R (Reverse) for a manual transmission or P (Park) for an Intelligent Variable Transmission.

3. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.

4. Remove the wheel nut wrench, jack, jack handle and spare tire from the vehicle.

5. Block the front and rear wheels diagonally opposite the jack position.

WARNING - Tire Replacement

  • To prevent the vehicle from moving while changing a tire, always apply the parking brake fully and always place wheel chocks under the wheel diagonally opposite the one being changed.
  • We recommend blocking the vehicle's wheels and not allowing anyone to remain in the vehicle while it is raised with the jack.

6. Loosen each wheel nut counterclockwise by one turn, but do not remove any nut until the tire is off the ground.

7. Place the jack at the front (1) or rear (2) jacking position closest to the tire you are replacing. Install the jack at the designated locations under the frame. The jacking positions are plates welded to the frame with two protrusions and an indexing point for the jack.

WARNING - Jack Position

To avoid injury, use only the jack supplied with the vehicle and place it in the correct jacking position; never use any other part of the vehicle to support the jack.

8. Insert the jack handle into the jack and turn it clockwise to raise the vehicle until the tire is just off the ground. This distance is approximately 30 mm (1 in). Before removing the wheel nuts, make sure the vehicle is stable and there is no chance of movement or slipping.

9. Loosen the wheel nuts and remove them by hand. Slide the wheel off the studs and lay it flat so it cannot roll away. To install the spare wheel, lift it into position, align the holes with the studs, and place the wheel on them. If this is difficult, tilt the wheel slightly and guide the upper hole over the upper stud. Then rock the wheel back and forth until it slides over the other studs.

Wheels and wheel covers may have sharp edges. Handle them carefully to avoid possible injury. Before installing a wheel, make sure nothing (such as dirt, resin, gravel, etc.) is on the hub or wheel that would prevent it from sitting flush against the hub.

CAUTION - Wheel Installation

Make sure the wheel contacts the hub properly when installing it. If the seating surface between the wheel and hub is poor, the wheel nuts may loosen and the wheel may come off. Loss of a wheel may result in loss of vehicle control.

10. To install the wheel, hold it on the studs, place the wheel nuts on the studs, and tighten them by hand. Rock the tire to make sure it is seated fully, then tighten the nuts by hand again as far as possible.

11. Lower the vehicle to the ground by turning the wheel nut wrench counterclockwise.

Then position the wrench as shown in the illustration and tighten the wheel nuts. Make sure the socket is fully seated on the nut. Do not stand on the wrench handle or use an extension pipe on the wrench handle.

Go around the wheel, tightening each nut in the numerical sequence shown in the illustration until they are snug. Then recheck the tightening of each nut. After replacing a wheel, have the wheel nuts tightened to the correct torque at an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.

Wheel nut tightening torque:

Steel wheel and aluminum alloy wheel: 11–13 kgf·m (79–94 lbf·ft)

If you have a tire pressure gauge, remove the valve cap and check the air pressure. If the pressure is lower than recommended, drive slowly to the nearest service station and inflate to the correct pressure. If it is too high, release air until it is correct. Always reinstall the valve cap after checking or adjusting tire pressure. If the cap is not installed, air may leak from the tire. If you lose the valve cap, buy a new one and install it as soon as possible.

After replacing the wheel, always secure the flat tire in its place and return the jack and tools to their proper storage locations.

CAUTION

After replacing a tire, retighten the wheel nuts after driving approximately 50 km (30 miles) to make sure they have not loosened. Check and retighten the wheel nuts again after driving approximately 1000 km (620 miles).

WARNING - Replacing Wheel Nuts

When removing a wheel, make sure the same nuts that were removed are reinstalled - or, if replaced, that nuts with metric threads and the same seat configuration are used. Your vehicle has metric threads on the wheel studs and nuts. Installing a non-metric nut on a metric stud will not secure the wheel to the hub properly and will damage the stud, so it must be replaced.

Note that most wheel nuts do not have metric threads. Always exercise extreme caution when checking the thread type before installing wheel nuts or wheels. If in doubt, consult an authorized Kia dealer.

WARNING - Wheel Studs

Do not drive the vehicle with damaged wheel studs. If the studs are damaged, they may lose the ability to hold the wheel. This could result in loss of the wheel and a collision.

To prevent rattling of the jack, jack handle, wheel nut wrench, and spare tire while the vehicle is in motion, store them properly.

Check the tire inflation pressure as soon as possible after installing the spare tire. If necessary, adjust it to the specified pressure. Refer to the Tires and Wheels section in Chapter 8.

Important - Use of the Temporary Spare Tire (if equipped)

Your vehicle is equipped with a compact spare tire. This compact spare tire takes up less space than a regular-size tire. This tire is smaller than a regular tire and is intended for temporary use only.

When using a compact spare tire, drive the vehicle carefully. The compact spare tire must be replaced with a suitable regular tire and wheel as soon as possible.

It is not recommended to operate this vehicle with more than one compact spare tire in use at the same time.

WARNING - Spare Tire

Do not drive the vehicle with this compact spare tire at speeds over 80 km/h mph. The compact spare tire is intended for emergency use only. The original tire should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible to avoid failure of the spare, which may result in personal injury or death.

The compact spare tire must be inflated to 420 kPa (60 psi).

✽ NOTICE

Check the tire pressure after installing the spare tire. Adjust it to the specified pressure if necessary.

When using the compact spare tire, observe the following precautions:

  • Under no circumstances exceed a speed of 80 km/h; higher speed may damage the tire.
  • Drive slowly enough for road conditions to avoid all hazards. Any road hazard, such as a pothole or debris, can seriously damage the compact spare tire.
  • Continued use of this tire on the road may cause it to fail, resulting in loss of vehicle control and possible injury.
  • Do not exceed the vehicle's maximum load capacity or the load capacity shown on the sidewall of the compact spare tire.
  • Avoid driving over obstacles. The compact spare tire has a smaller diameter than a regular tire and reduces ground clearance by approximately 25 mm (1 inch), which may cause damage to the vehicle.
  • Do not wash this vehicle in an automatic car wash when the compact spare is installed.
  • Do not install the compact spare tire on the front axle if the vehicle is to be driven on snow or ice.
  • Do not use the compact spare tire on any other vehicle, because this tire was designed specifically for your vehicle.
  • The tread life of the compact spare tire is shorter than that of a conventional tire. Inspect the compact spare tire regularly and replace worn compact spare tires with one of the same size and design, mounted on the same wheel.
  • Do not use the compact spare tire on any other wheels. Standard tires, winter tires, wheel covers or wheel trim rings may not be used with the compact spare tire. Attempting to do so may damage these components or other vehicle components.
  • Do not use more than one compact spare tire at the same time.
  • Do not tow a trailer while the compact spare tire is installed.
