Driving Your Vehicle

Before Driving

~3min read

Before Entering the Vehicle

  • Make sure all windows, outside mirrors and exterior lamps are clean.
  • Check the condition of the tires.
  • Check under the vehicle for any signs of leaks.
  • Make sure there are no obstacles behind you if you are going to reverse.

Required Checks

Fluid levels, such as engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, and washer fluid, should be checked regularly at intervals specific to each fluid. Refer to Chapter 8, Maintenance, for more detailed information.

WARNING

Distracted driving may result in loss of vehicle control, which may lead to an accident, severe personal injury and death. The primary responsibility of the driver is the safe and legal operation of the vehicle. Portable devices, other equipment or vehicle systems that take the driver's eyes, attention and focus away from the safe operation of the vehicle, or that are not permitted by law, must never be used while operating the vehicle.

Before Starting

  • Close and lock all doors.
  • Adjust the seat so that all controls are easily accessible.
  • Adjust the inside and outside rearview mirrors.
  • Make sure all lights work.
  • Check all gauges.
  • Check the operation of the warning lamps when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.
  • Release the parking brake and make sure the brake warning light goes off.

For safe operation, make sure you are familiar with your vehicle and its equipment.

WARNING

All passengers must be properly secured with seat belts while the vehicle is in motion. Refer to "Seat Belts" on page 3-16 for more information on their proper use.

WARNING

Always check the area around the vehicle for people, especially children, before shifting into D (Drive) or R (Reverse).

WARNING

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs

Driving under the influence is dangerous. Driving under the influence is the number one cause of annual road fatalities. Even a small amount of alcohol will affect your reflexes, perception, and judgment. Driving under the influence of drugs is just as dangerous, or even more dangerous, than driving under the influence of alcohol.

You are much more likely to be involved in a serious accident if you drink or use drugs and drive.

If you have been drinking or using drugs, do not drive. Do not ride with a driver who has been drinking or using drugs. Choose a designated driver or call a taxi.

WARNING

  • If you are going to park or stop the vehicle with the engine running, be careful not to depress the accelerator pedal for a long period of time. This may overheat the engine or exhaust system and cause a fire.
  • When you make a sudden stop or turn the steering wheel sharply, objects may fall to the floor and interfere with the pedals, which may cause an accident. Keep all items in the vehicle stored securely.
  • Failure to concentrate on driving may result in an accident. Be careful when using items that may distract you from driving, such as the audio system or heater. It is the driver's responsibility to always operate the vehicle safely.
