Folding the Split/One-Piece Seatback

To increase luggage capacity, you can fold down the rear seatbacks.

WARNING

Do not drive with passengers sitting on the folded rear seatbacks or in the luggage area: Passengers in the luggage area are at risk because they cannot fasten their seat belts. In a sudden stop or collision, this may cause injury or death.

Never allow children to play in the car with the seatbacks folded down: Allowing children to play in a car with folded seatbacks is dangerous. If a child climbs into the luggage area and the seats are then returned to the upright position, the child may become trapped in the luggage compartment, which may lead to an accident.

Secure the cargo properly in the luggage compartment when transporting it with the seatbacks folded down: Driving without properly securing the cargo and luggage endangers safety, because in the event of sudden braking or a collision, it may move forward and injure passengers.

When transporting luggage, do not allow it to rise above the height of the seatbacks: Loading cargo above the height of the seatbacks endangers safety, because rear and side visibility of the vehicle is restricted, which may adversely affect driving conditions and lead to an accident.

CAUTION

  • (Hatchback) When folding a front seatback forward, always support it with your hand.
If you do not hold the seatback with your hand, your fingers or hand may be injured when you press the lock button.
  • Before folding down the rear seatback, check the position of the front seat.
  • Depending on the position of the front seat, it may not be possible to fold the rear seatback completely down, as it may strike the front seatback or its pocket and cause scratches or damage. If necessary, remove the headrest of the outboard rear seat.

    (Sedan)

    1. If your vehicle is equipped with a headrest, lower it fully.

    See "Headrests" on page 2-12.

    2. (Split-folding seatback) Open the luggage compartment cover and pull the lever of the seatback you want to fold.

To return the seatback to the upright position:

    WARNING

When returning the seatback to the upright position, check that the 3-point seat belts are pulled out from under the seatbacks and are not twisted.

Leaving part of the seat belt under the seatback once it is returned to the upright position, or a twisted belt, prevents it from working properly, which may result in serious injury or death.

When returning the seatback to the upright position, check that it is properly locked and that no red indicator is visible (Hatchback).

If a red indicator is visible behind the rear seatback lock button, this means the seatback is not locked. Driving with an unlocked rear seatback may cause it to drop suddenly, which may lead to an accident.

    (Sedan)

    1. Make sure the belt passes correctly through the belt guide and is not twisted, then raise the seatback, taking care that the belt is not caught by the seatback.

    2. Push the seatback rearward and lock it in position. After returning the seatback to the upright position, make sure it is properly locked.

    (Hatchback)

    1. Check that the seat belt is secured in the retainer.

    2. Raise the seatback to the upright position.

    3. Push the seatback rearward and lock it in position. After returning the seatback to the upright position, make sure it is properly locked.

    4. Check that the seat belt is not pinched by the rear seatback and is not twisted, then remove it from the retainer.
