Collision prevention assist
General notes
COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST includes the distance alert function and the Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist function, described in the following sections.
Distance alert
WARNINGThe distance alert is not always able to detect objects or accurately analyze complex situations.
In this case, the distance alert may
- issue a warning in error
- fail to warn you
There is a risk of an accident. Always pay attention to traffic conditions and be ready to brake, especially when the distance alert warns you.
WARNINGThe distance alert does not take into account
- persons and animals
- vehicles travelling in the opposite direction
- vehicles crossing on cross traffic routes
- curves
As a result, the distance alert cannot always warn you in critical situations. There is a risk of an accident. Always pay attention to traffic conditions and be ready to brake.
- Activation and deactivation: activate and deactivate the distance alert via the on-board computer.
When the distance alert is activated, the symbol
appears in the multifunction display
as long as the HOLD function is not activated. On vehicles equipped with Active Parking Assist, the symbol
appears if the transmission is in P or you are driving faster than 35 km/h.
The distance alert helps you reduce the risk of colliding with the vehicle ahead or reduce the consequences of a possible collision. If the distance alert detects a risk of collision, you are warned by a visual and audible signal. Without your intervention, the distance alert cannot prevent a collision.
The distance alert warns you from approx. 30 km/h when
- for several seconds, the distance to the vehicle ahead is too short for your current speed. The distance alert warning lamp
which is located in the
instrument cluster then lights up. - you are approaching the vehicle ahead very rapidly. In this case, an intermittent warning signal sounds and the distance alert warning lamp
which is located in the instrument cluster
lights up.
- Brake immediately to increase the distance to the vehicle ahead.
- Steer around the obstacle, if you can do so safely.
For the distance alert to work, the function must be activated in the on-board computer and be operational.
In complex traffic situations, the system may issue warnings in error due to its design.
The distance alert uses the radar sensor system to detect obstacles that have been in your path for a certain time.
The distance alert can also react to stationary obstacles (such as stopped or parked vehicles) up to a speed of approx. 70 km/h.
If you approach an obstacle and the distance alert detects a risk of collision, it warns you with a visual and audible signal.
Detection may be limited in particular
- when the sensors are dirty or covered
- in snowfall or heavy rain
- when interference is caused by other radar sources
- in the case of strong radar reflection, for example in underground car parks
- if the vehicle ahead is narrow, for example a motorcycle
- if the vehicle ahead is driving on a path offset from the center of your vehicle
If the front of the vehicle has been damaged, have the adjustment and function of the radar sensors checked by a qualified workshop.
This also applies to low-speed collisions that do not cause any visible damage to the front of the vehicle.
Observe the section "Important safety notes".
Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist
WARNINGAdaptive Emergency Brake Assist is not always able to detect objects or accurately analyze complex situations. In this case, Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist cannot intervene.
There is a risk of an accident. Always pay attention to traffic conditions and be ready to brake.
WARNINGAdaptive Emergency Brake Assist does not take into account
- persons and animals
- vehicles travelling in the opposite direction
- vehicles crossing on cross traffic routes
- fixed obstacles
- curves
Therefore, Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist cannot intervene in critical situations. There is a risk of an accident. Always pay attention to traffic conditions and be ready to brake.
Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist helps you brake in critical situations as soon as the speed is above 30 km/h and uses the radar sensor system to assess traffic conditions.
Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist uses the radar sensor system to detect obstacles that have been in your path for a certain time.
If you are approaching an obstacle and Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist detects a risk of collision, it calculates the braking pressure required to avoid a collision. If you press the brake pedal firmly, Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist automatically increases the braking pressure to a value suited to the situation.
- Keep the brake pedal pressed for as long as the emergency braking situation requires.
The ABS, for its part, prevents the wheels from locking.
The brakes return to normal operation when
- you release the brake pedal
- any risk of collision has been eliminated
- no obstacle is detected in your path any longer
Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist is deactivated.
Vehicles equipped with PRE-SAFE®: if Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist requests a particularly high braking pressure, preventive occupant protection measures (PRE-SAFE®) are also triggered.
Up to a speed of approximately 250 km/h, Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist can react to objects that have been detected at least once as moving during the observation interval. Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist does not react to fixed obstacles.
If Adaptive Emergency Brake Assist is not available due to a fault in the radar sensor system, the brake system continues to operate with all normal brake assistance and BAS assistance.
