Starting the engine

~2min read
Démarrage du moteur

Manual transmission: depress the clutch pedal.

Automatic transmission: depress the brake pedal and move the selector lever to P or N.

Do not depress the accelerator pedal.

Diesel engines: turn the key to position 2 for preheating until the indicatorgoes out.

Turn the key briefly to position 3 and release it: an automatic procedure operates the starter with a slight delay until the engine runs, see Automatic starter control.

Before restarting or to stop the engine, turn the ignition key back to position 0.

During an Auto Stop, depress the clutch pedal to restart the engine.

Starting the vehicle at low temperatures

Starting the engine without auxiliary heating is possible down to -25 °C for diesel engines and -30 °C for gasoline engines. Simply select engine oil of the appropriate viscosity, use the correct fuel, carry out the prescribed maintenance and make sure the battery is sufficiently charged. At temperatures below -30 °C, the automatic transmission needs a warm-up time of about 5 minutes. The selector lever must be in position P.

Automatic starter control

This function controls the engine starting procedure. The driver does not need to hold the key in position 3. Once started, the system continues to crank the engine automatically until it runs. Due to the control procedure, the engine starts after a slight delay.

Possible causes if the engine does not start:

  • clutch pedal not depressed (manual transmission);
  • brake pedal not depressed or selector lever not in P or N (automatic transmission);
  • time limit exceeded.

Turbo engine warm-up

After starting, the available engine torque may be reduced for a short time, especially when the engine is cold, so that the lubrication system can fully protect the engine.

Deceleration fuel cut-off

The fuel supply is automatically cut off during deceleration, i.e. when the vehicle is moving and a gear is engaged, but the accelerator pedal is released.
