STARTER MOTOR TEST WITH DIAGNOSTIC STATION

The starter motor is tested with the OPTIMA 5800 diagnostic station, which measures battery voltage and current draw during cranking. The following faults can be identified:

  • battery fault (voltage drops under starter load),
  • starter motor seized (current draw too high),
  • drive pinion fault (current draw too low).

To perform the test, the vehicle must be prevented from starting:

  • D7F, E7J engines: disconnect the engine speed sensor (located on the clutch housing),
  • F8Q engine: disconnect the electric fuel pump cut-off and insulate the terminal.

NOTE:

  • an open circuit on the engine speed sensor, where the ignition creates a fault stored in the injection ECU; it must be cleared using the XR25 tool (see chapter "Injection"),
  • if the vehicle is fitted with an immobiliser, simply lock the doors using the remote.

D7F engine

REMOVAL

Raise the vehicle on a lift and disconnect the battery.

Disconnect the starter motor electrical connections.

Démarreur

Remove the two starter motor mounting bolts.

INSTALLATION

Refit in the reverse order of removal.

E7J Engine

REMOVAL

Position the vehicle on a two-post lift.

Remove:

  • the battery,
  • the injection ECU bracket, after disconnecting the 55-pin connector and the impact sensor connector,
Démarreur
  • the power steering pipe clip (1) and the bracket (A),
Démarreur
  • the front right wheel,
  • the transmission pin using pins B. Vi. 31-01,
  • the upper shock absorber base bolt and loosen the lower bolt.

Tilt the hub and disconnect the driveshaft from the gearbox.

Disconnect the starter motor wiring, remove the mounting bolts and remove the starter from underneath.

INSTALLATION

Refit in reverse order of removal.

Check that the centring sleeve is in position at (B).

REMOVAL

Position the vehicle on a two-post lift.

Remove:

  • the air filter inlet duct,
  • the battery,
  • the ECU bracket mounting bolts and the connectors (1), then move the ECU bracket / fuel filter assembly aside,
Démarreur
  • the starter motor mounting bolts and the heat shield (A),
