Removal

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the generator adjusting bolt (A) to decrease the tension.
  3. Remove the drive belt (A).

Inspection

Drive Belt Inspection: Visually inspect the belt for excessive wear, frayed cords, etc. If any defect is found, replace the drive belt.
Cracks on the belt ribs are acceptable. If any rib sections are missing from the belt, replace it.

Adjustment

Drive Belt Tension Measurement and Adjustment Drive belt tension measurement. Measure belt tension using a mechanical tension gauge or sonic tension meter. Tension New belt: 961.0 ~ 980.7 N (98.0 ~ 100.0 kgf, 216.1 ~ 220.5 lbf) Used belt: 637.4 ~ 735.5 N (65.0 ~ 75.0 kgf, 143.3 ~ 165.3 lbf)
  • If the engine has been running for 5 minutes or more, adjust the belt tension as for a used belt.
  • When installing the poly-V belt, make sure all pulley grooves are covered by the belt ribs.
  • A loose belt causes slipping noise.
  • An excessively tight belt may damage the alternator and water pump bearings.
Using a mechanical tension gauge (type BT-33-73F, BTG-2)
  1. While pressing the handle (A) of the gauge, insert the belt (B) between the pulley and the pulley (or idler pulley) into the gap between the spindle (C) and the hook (D).
  2. Release the handle (A), then read the value on the scale indicated by the pointer (B).
  3. Enter the belt specifications into the tension gauge.
Belt Type Measurement Point Input Data
    M (Mass, g/m) W (Width, ribs) S (Span, mm)
    With A/C Crankshaft pulley to A/C compressor pulley 13,4 6 178,9
Without A/C Tensioner to generator pulley 13,4 6 Actual measured value

Measurement S (range): Calculate the average value after measuring the distance 3-4 times.
D: Idler pulley; G: Generator pulley
  4. Position the microphone (B) closer to the center of the belt (A) and tap the belt with your finger 2-3 times. Read the value on the display. [With A/C]
    [Without A/C]
  5. Loosen the mounting bolts (A).
  6. Lightly tighten the adjusting bolt (B) clockwise; loosen the bolt counterclockwise with greater force.
  7. Recheck the belt tension.
  8. After adjusting the tension, tighten the through bolts. Tightening Torque: 12 mm Bolt: 19.6 ~ 26 N·m 14 mm Bolt: 29.4 ~ 41 N·m
Using a sonic tension meter (type U-505/507). If adjustment is required:

Installation

  1. Install the drive belt (A).
  2. Adjust the tension by tightening the generator tension adjusting bolt (B), then install the mounting bolts (A). Tightening torque Bolt 12 mm (0.47 in.): 19.6 ~ 26 N·m Bolt 14 mm (0.55 in.): 29.4 ~ 41 N·m
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
