Using the shift lever

Uso della leva del cambio

Using the shift position

Uso della posizione di innesto

*1: The most appropriate gear position is automatically selected based on the accelerator pedal and vehicle speed.
*2: A gear position must be selected manually. However, the gear position may be automatically downshifted to obtain the optimum gear ratio based on vehicle speed.

Shifting gears in M mode

Move the shift lever to M and operate it, or use the steering wheel shift paddles.

Cambio delle marce in modalità M
  1. Upshifting
  2. Downshifting

If the accelerator pedal is pressed further while driving, a lower gear will be selected.

Depending on the vehicle speed, gear shifting may not be possible.

Shifting gears in E mode

When the shift position is in E, the steering wheel shift paddles can be used as follows to temporarily select a gear position. When a gear is selected, its position is displayed.

Cambio delle marce in modalità E
  1. Upshifting
  2. Downshifting

Gear position indicator

The gear position indicator is a support tool that helps the driver achieve better fuel economy and reduce exhaust emissions within the limits of engine performance.

Indicatore di marcia
  1. Upshifting
  2. Downshifting

The gear position indicator only operates in M mode

■ Maximum allowable speeds Observe the following maximum allowable speeds for each gear when maximum vehicle acceleration is required.

Velocità massime consentite

■ Downshift restriction warning buzzer (in E mode [when the steering wheel shift paddles are operated] or M mode) To ensure safety and good driving performance, it may not be possible to downshift in some cases. In some circumstances, it may not be possible to downshift even when the shift lever or steering wheel shift paddle is operated. (The warning buzzer sounds twice.)

■ Reverse warning buzzer When the shift lever is moved to R, a buzzer sounds to inform the driver that the shift lever is in the R position.

■ If the shift lever cannot be moved

  • With the shift lever in N, depress the brake pedal to move the shift lever. If the shift lever cannot be moved while depressing the brake pedal, there may be a problem with the shift lock system.
  • With the shift lever in a position other than N

■ If the driver's door is opened while the shift lever is in a position other than N and the engine is running A buzzer sounds. Close the driver's door.

■ If the parking brake is applied while the shift lever is in a position other than N with the engine running

  • When the driver's door is opened A buzzer sounds and the shift position automatically changes to N after 10 seconds.
  • When the driver's door is closed A buzzer sounds and the shift position automatically changes to N after 90 seconds.

■ If the M indicator does not light up even after moving the shift lever to the M position This may indicate a malfunction of the multi-mode manual shift system.

Have the vehicle checked immediately by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.

(In this situation, the vehicle will operate as if the shift lever were in the E position.)

■ If the N indicator flashes

  • When shifting gears with the shift lever: Move the shift lever to the N position. Wait a few seconds, then move the shift lever to the desired position.
  • When the engine is switched off: Vehicles without smart entry and start system: Turn the engine switch to the "ON" position and move the shift lever to N, then move it to the desired position.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system: Set the engine switch to IGNITION ON mode and move the shift lever to N, then shift to the desired position.

If the indicator continues to flash after performing the above operations, move the shift lever to the N position and start the engine. Then move the shift lever to the desired position.

■ If the N indicator flashes and the warning buzzer sounds Move the shift lever to the N position, then to the E, M or R position.

WARNING

■ Gear position indicator display For safety reasons, the driver should not rely solely on the display.

Refer to the display when it is safe to do so, taking into account actual traffic and road conditions. Failure to do so may cause an accident.
