WARNING Observe the following precautions.
Failure to observe this may result in serious or fatal injury.
■ Before driving
- Make sure the tailgate is fully closed. If it is left open or not fully closed, it may open unexpectedly while driving, and objects around the vehicle or luggage in the luggage compartment may suddenly fall out, causing an accident.
- Do not allow children to play in the luggage compartment.
If a child is accidentally shut in the luggage compartment, the child may collapse from heat or suffer other injuries.
■ Important points when driving Do not allow any passenger to sit in the luggage compartment. In the event of sudden braking, sudden steering or a collision, passengers seated in the luggage compartment may suffer serious or fatal injuries.
■ Operating the tailgate Observe the following precautions.
Failure to observe these precautions may cause body parts to be crushed, resulting in serious or fatal injury.
- Remove any heavy load, such as snow or ice, from the tailgate before opening it. Otherwise, the tailgate may close again immediately after being opened.
- When opening or closing the tailgate, carefully check that the area around it is clear and safe.
- If someone is nearby, make sure they are safe and inform them that the back door is about to be opened or closed.
- Take care when opening or closing the back door in windy weather, as strong gusts may cause it to move suddenly.

- The back door may close suddenly if it is not fully open. It is harder to open or close the back door when the vehicle is on a slope than on level ground, so take care that it does not open or close suddenly on its own. Make sure the back door is fully open and secure before using the luggage compartment.
- When closing the back door, take great care to avoid pinching your fingers and the like.

- Do not pull on or hang from the back door strut to close the door.
NOTE
■ Back door struts The back door is fitted with struts that hold it in position.
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to observe these precautions may cause damage to the back door struts and subsequent malfunction.

- Do not apply foreign objects such as labels, plastic sheets or adhesive to the strut rod.
- Do not touch the strut rod with gloves or other cloth objects.
- Do not install accessories other than genuine Toyota accessories on the back door.
- Do not place your hands on the strut or apply lateral force to it.
