Anti-lock brake system

ABS Faults

~1min read

If the ABS is switched off, the ABS indicator lights up on the instrument panel. If the engine was stopped and then restarted during this time, the ABS switches on automatically again.

When the ignition is switched on, the ABS indicator lights up on the instrument panel. It must go out when the engine is running, or at the latest when the vehicle speed exceeds 6 km/h. If the vehicle voltage drops below 10 V, the indicator lights up again. It may also flash if one wheel spins for longer than 20 s. In this case, switch the ignition off and on again, then start the engine.

If the indicator remains on continuously, the ABS is faulty. The cause must be determined by a suitably equipped Audi or Bosch workshop. Not every workshop can perform this work, because it requires special tools and trained personnel, so ask before leaving the vehicle.

At home, you can only check the plug connections to the control unit, to the wheel speed sensors or to the hydraulic unit.

Note: Even if the ABS indicator remains on continuously, meaning the anti-lock braking system is switched off or faulty, the vehicle may be driven without restriction. In this case the brake system functions as in a vehicle not equipped with ABS.
