Troubleshooting

Starting by towing

~1min read

Starting by towing is generally not recommended.

  • With the vehicle stationary, engage 2nd or 3rd gear.
  • Press and hold the clutch pedal.
  • Switch on the ignition.
  • When both vehicles are moving, release the clutch pedal.
  • As soon as the engine has started: press the clutch pedal and move the gear lever to neutral.

If the engine does not start, first try to start it using another vehicle's battery => page 291. Only if this method does not work should you try starting your car by towing. When starting by towing, the engine is turned over by the movement of the wheels.

Petrol engine vehicles should only be towed over a short distance, otherwise unburnt fuel may reach the catalytic converter.

For technical reasons, starting by towing is not possible if the vehicle is equipped with an automatic gearbox.

CAUTION!

Starting by towing involves a high risk of accident, e.g. risk of collision with the towing vehicle.

Warning!

The distance travelled when starting by towing must not exceed 50 m - risk of damaging the catalytic converter.
