General information
Several points must be observed when towing and when starting by towing.
If you use a towing cable, observe the following points:
Driver of the towing vehicle
- Only pull away once the cable is taut.
- Engage the clutch gently when pulling away. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, accelerate carefully.
Driver of the towed vehicle
- Switch the ignition on so that the steering wheel is not locked and the turn signals, horn, windshield wipers and washer can be operated.
- Place the gear lever in neutral, or the selector lever in position N.
- Be aware that the brake booster and power steering only work while the engine is running. With the engine off, much more force is needed on the brake pedal and more effort is needed to turn the steering wheel.
- Make sure the cable always remains taut.
Towing cable / towing bar
Towing with a towing bar is safer and places less stress on the vehicles. Use a towing cable only if you do not have a towing bar.
The towing cable must be elastic to protect both vehicles. Use a synthetic fiber cable or a cable made of a material with the same elasticity.
Attach the towing cable or towing bar only to the towing eyes provided for this purpose.
Driving style
Towing requires some experience, especially when using a towing cable. The drivers of both vehicles must know the particulars of towing technique. Inexperienced drivers must never tow or start a vehicle by towing.
Regarding your driving style, make sure that no impermissible traction forces or jerks occur.
When towing off paved roads, there is always a risk of overloading the attachment points.
CAUTION!
If there is no electrical power, all lighting devices such as brake lights and turn signals are inoperative. Do not have your vehicle towed - risk of accident!
Warning!
If there is no lubricant in the gearbox due to a fault, the car may only be towed with the drive wheels raised, or loaded onto a transport vehicle or trailer designed for this purpose.
Note
- Observe the legal requirements.
- Switch on the hazard warning lights on both vehicles. Observe any other applicable regulations.
- Make sure the cable is not twisted so that the front towing eye cannot loosen.
