How the front airbags work

~1min read

When fully inflated, the airbags reduce the risk of injury to the head and upper body.

The airbag system is designed so that the driver and front passenger airbags deploy in a severe frontal collision.

Some accidents may cause the front airbags as well as the side and curtain airbags to deploy.

When the system is activated, the airbags inflate with gas and deploy in front of the driver and front passenger => fig. 181. The airbags inflate in a fraction of

a second, at very high speed, to provide additional protection in an accident. When the front occupants are thrown into the fully deployed airbag, their movement is cushioned and the risk of head and chest injury is reduced.

The airbag is specially designed to let gas escape in a controlled way as the occupants push into it, catching the head and torso. After an accident, the airbag deflates, clearing the view ahead again.
