Oil Pump Removal, Installation and Inspection
Removal
Models 520i, 523i, 528i (M52 engine)
* To check the vacuum valve operation, it is sufficient to remove the oil pan beforehand. The oil pump does not need to be removed.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Removal and Installation.
2. Remove the nut and the oil pump drive sprocket. Loosen the chain tensioner at the same time. Refer to the accompanying illustration.
* The nut has a left-hand thread.

3. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts (arrows in the accompanying illustration) and remove the oil pump. Note the two locating sleeves, which are required for correct installation.

4. Lower and remove the oil pan.
Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. If necessary, disassemble and clean the oil pump in the following order: Disconnect the suction pipe by removing bolts (13), remove the pump housing mounting bolts (5). Do not lose the locating sleeves (4). Refer to the accompanying illustration.
2. Inspect rotors (2) and (3) for wear and scoring, and replace if necessary. Measure the radial clearance between the outer rotor and the housing, and the axial clearance of the inner rotor. Specifications are given in the Specifications section.
3. Remove the snap ring (10) and remove the pressure relief valve. Refer to the accompanying illustration. Measure the free length of the spring and replace it if necessary. The required value is given in the Specifications.

* The O-ring (8) must always be replaced with a new one. Carefully insert the pressure relief valve and install the snap ring.
4. Secure the suction pipe. The protrusion on the seal must face the suction housing.
5. Lubricate all parts with engine oil. Lightly tighten the oil pump cover to a torque of 10 N·m.
Installation
PROCEDURE
1. Install the oil pump and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 20 N·m. Two locating sleeves are provided to center the oil pump housing. Install the sprocket with the chain fitted and tighten the nut (left-hand thread) to a torque of 25 N·m. Install the tensioner if it was removed.
2. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Removal and Installation.
