Fan and Fan Clutch Removal and Installation
The viscous clutch must be replaced if the hub has scoring. In this case, the fan does not rotate, or rotates with difficulty, when the engine is stopped. The clutch must also be replaced if the axial or radial play exceeds 0.6 mm. To check, move the fan in both directions. No oil should leak from the hub.
REMOVAL
1. Unscrew the fan mounting nut using a 32 mm wrench and remove it. Refer to the accompanying illustration.
* The nut has a left-hand thread.
When loosening the nut, hold the water pump drive belt compressed to keep the hub from rotating. If the nut is very tight, strike the wrench handle with a hammer. (BMW workshops use a special tool that holds the pulley by the bolt heads.) After loosening the nut, it can be fully unscrewed by turning the fan blade. Make sure the fan blade does not fall.

2. Disconnect the fan cover at the top left and right. To do this, remove the pin with a narrow screwdriver. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

3. Press the fan cover at the top center and disconnect the tab.
4. Lift out the fan together with the cover.
5. If it is necessary to separate the fan blade from the viscous clutch, unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the clutch. Refer to the accompanying illustration.

INSTALLATION
1. Insert the viscous clutch into the fan blade and tighten the mounting bolts to 10 N·m.
* To avoid damaging the threads and the clutch, never overtighten the bolts. (Refer to the accompanying illustration.)

2. Insert the fan cover with the fan from above so that the lower mounting tabs engage the lugs on the radiator.
3. Insert the clips and secure them with pins. Replace damaged clips or pins.
4. Secure the fan to the water pump hub to a torque of 40 N·m. Hold the hub by the drive belt or by the bolt heads.
