Driving tips

Save fuel. Vehicle equipment. General. Tires. Avoid high engine speeds

~3min read

Saving fuel in the BMW 5 G30 – this chapter shows you how. Through anticipatory driving, suitable tire selection and avoiding unnecessary loads, consumption and emissions can be noticeably reduced. Information on tire pressure, engine speed behaviour and the effect of an open glass roof or accessories rounds off the topic. If you want to drive in an environmentally and economically responsible way, you will find practical tips for everyday use here.

Vehicle equipment

This chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional equipment offered in the model series. It therefore also describes equipment that is not available in a given vehicle, for example due to the selected optional equipment or country variant. This also applies to safety-related functions and systems. When using the corresponding functions and systems, observe the applicable laws and regulations.

General

The vehicle features comprehensive technologies for reducing fuel consumption and emission values.

Fuel consumption depends on various factors.

Certain measures, such as a moderate driving style and regular maintenance, can influence fuel consumption and environmental impact.

Remove unneeded cargo

Additional weight increases fuel consumption.

Remove add-on parts after use

Remove additional mirrors, roof rack or rear carrier when no longer needed.

Add-on parts on the vehicle impair aerodynamics and increase fuel consumption.

Close windows and glass roof

An open glass roof or open windows increase air resistance and therefore fuel consumption.

Tires

General

Tires can affect consumption values differently, e.g. tire size can influence fuel consumption.

Check tire inflation pressure regularly

Check tire inflation pressure at least twice a month and before starting a longer journey, and correct it if necessary.

Insufficient tire inflation pressure increases rolling resistance and therefore fuel consumption and tire wear.

Drive off immediately

Do not let the engine warm up while stationary; drive off immediately at moderate engine speed.

This allows the cold engine to reach operating temperature the fastest.

Drive anticipatively

Anticipatory and smooth driving reduces fuel consumption.

Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking.

To do so, keep an appropriate distance from the vehicle ahead.

Avoid high engine speeds

As a general rule, driving at low engine speed reduces fuel consumption and wear.

Use 1st gear only for pulling away. From 2nd gear onwards, accelerate briskly. Avoid high engine speeds and shift up early.

Once the desired speed is reached, shift into the highest possible gear and drive at low engine speed and constant speed.

If necessary, observe the gear shift indicator of the vehicle.

Use overrun mode

When approaching a red light, release the accelerator and let the vehicle coast.

On a downhill stretch, release the accelerator and let the vehicle roll.

The fuel supply is interrupted in overrun mode.

The fuel-saving notes for the BMW 5 G30/G31 offer practical tips to reduce consumption while protecting the environment. From the right loading to tire pressure to an optimised driving style – every point is aimed at maximum efficiency.

The clear recommendations on overrun mode and on avoiding high engine speeds are particularly helpful, as they can noticeably reduce fuel consumption. Driving off immediately after starting instead of letting the engine warm up is also highlighted as an effective measure.

This is how the BMW 5 G30/G31 becomes a companion that actively supports the driver in saving costs and driving in a more sustainable way.
