This chapter explains how the BMW 5 Series (G30/G31) reduces fuel consumption with Auto Start/Stop and intelligent energy management. The driver is encouraged to switch off the engine during stops and to switch off consumers that are not needed, such as the seat heating or rear window defroster, in good time. In ECO PRO mode, the vehicle automatically takes over parts of this energy management. Regular maintenance ensures efficiency over the long term – for responsible driving pleasure.

Switch off the engine during longer stops

Principle

Switch off the engine during longer stops, e.g. at traffic lights, railway crossings or in traffic jams.

Auto Start Stop function

The Auto Start/Stop function of the vehicle switches off the engine automatically during a stop.

If the engine is switched off and then restarted, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced compared with an engine that runs continuously. Savings can already occur with an engine stop of just a few seconds.

Fuel consumption also depends on other factors, such as driving style, road conditions, maintenance or environmental factors.

Switch off functions that are not currently needed

Functions such as the seat heating or rear window defroster require a lot of energy and increase fuel consumption, particularly in city traffic and stop-and-go operation.

Switch off these functions when they are not needed.

The ECO PRO driving mode supports energy-saving use of comfort functions.

These functions are automatically partially or fully deactivated.

Have maintenance carried out

Have the vehicle serviced regularly to achieve optimum economy and service life. BMW recommends having maintenance work carried out by a BMW service partner.
