If power is interrupted (a loss of electrical supply), the gear selector lever is locked in position P.
If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started using jumper cables.
If the cause of the fault is not a discharged battery, release the gear selector lever and remove the key from the ignition switch.
Releasing the gear selector lever
Before shifting out of the Park (P) position, switch the ignition on and fully depress the brake pedal. If the lever cannot be shifted out of P with the ignition on and the brake pedal depressed, do the following:
- Switch the ignition off and remove the key.
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then pull up the parking brake lever.

- Remove the cover in the console using a thin tool, such as a flat-blade screwdriver.

- Insert the ignition key into the slot and press it in.
- Shift to neutral (N).
- Remove the key from the slot.
- Refit the cover.
- Have the vehicle repaired as soon as possible.
Otherwise the transmission may be damaged or the vehicle may move off unexpectedly, causing the driver to lose control of it.
