Wipers / Washers

Windscreen wipers

~6min read

The wiper switch position is transmitted by the steering column switch module to the BSI over the VAN CAR1 network.

The BSI stores this position until the switch position changes.

Wiping / washing operates with +APC or +ACC.

Front wiper

Front window wiping is manually controlled on vehicles without rain sensor.

Front window wiping is controlled manually or automatically on vehicles fitted with a rain sensor.

Wiper switch positions

The steering column switch module reads the wiper switch position.

The steering column switch module transmits the switch position to the BSI.

The BSI reads the wiper switch position.

The BSI sends the wiper speed relay activation commands to the engine compartment unit (BSM) over the VAN CAR1 network.

The BSI controls the wiper relay of the BSM by hard wire.

The BSM switches the front wiper speed relay to low speed or high speed.

WIPER SWITCH POSITIONS DESCRIPTION
Single wipe Activates one low speed wipe. If the request is held, the wipers run continuously at low speed.
Automatic control Provides intermittent low speed wiping, with the interval varying according to vehicle speed, for vehicles without rain sensor.
Automatically selects the wiping mode according to precipitation for vehicles fitted with a rain sensor.
Low speed wiper control Low speed wiping, switching to intermittent when the vehicle is stopped.
High speed wiper control High speed wiping, switching to low speed when the vehicle is stopped.

Automatic wiping mode for vehicles without rain sensor

The BSI receives vehicle speed information from the ABS control unit over the CAN network to determine the intermittent wiping delays for vehicles without rain sensor.

For intermittent control based on vehicle speed, the wiper delay varies according to the graph below:

Véhicule en décélération Véhicule en accélération

Automatic wiping mode for vehicles fitted with a rain sensor

The BSI receives the rain sensor information and determines the wiping mode according to precipitation for vehicles fitted with a rain sensor.

The BSI reads the rain sensor signal.

The BSI reads the rain sensor signal.

The BSI selects a wiping mode based on the sensor signal.

The BSI controls the wiper relay of the BSM by hard wire.

The BSI controls the wiper speed relay of the BSM over the VAN CAR1 network.

The BSM switches the front wiper speed relay to low speed or high speed.

PRECIPITATION TYPE WIPING MODE
No rain Fixed stop
Light Single wipe at low speed
Light to moderate Intermittent at low speed
Light to moderate Continuous low speed or high speed
Abrupt and strong High speed

Note: After +ACC is cut, the automatic wiping function is deactivated. The automatic position must be reset.

Display of automatic wiper mode activation

When switching to automatic mode, activation is confirmed by the following, depending on the initial switch position:

Visualisation de l'activation du mode automatique des essuie-vitres

Note: A quick passage from the single-wipe position to the low-speed position in automatic mode does not trigger confirmation.

Degraded modes

  • VAN network fault: the wiping function remains in the state it was in before the fault occurred.
  • When +APC disappears, the wipers stop. When +ACC or +APC reappears, only low speed is available.
  • Wiper locked in any stop position: the wiper motor relay supply is disconnected.
  • The BSI cuts the power to the front and rear wipers if, after 12 seconds, the BSI has not received a signal indicating that the wipers are in the fixed park position.
  • Rain sensor fault: the system no longer operates in automatic mode.

Warning: Dirt on the windscreen in the rain sensor area may cause the automatic mode to malfunction.

Warning: When washing the vehicle, it is essential to stop the wipers or switch off the ignition to prevent the rain sensor from triggering.

Rear wiper

The wiper switch position is interpreted by the steering column switch module. The information is sent to the BSI via the CAR1 VAN network.

The BSI receives vehicle speed information. The BSI directly controls the rear wiper motor.

The first detent position of the rear wiper ring allows wiping cycles linked to vehicle speed.

Degraded modes

If the VAN CAR 1 network fails, the BSI no longer receives the wiper switch position and there is no rear wiping.

Front and rear wiper stop management

CONDITION RESPONSE
Stop request, ignition on Any wiping cycle in progress is completed. The wipers always return to the park position at low speed.
When the ignition is switched off The wipers stop at their fixed park position
When switching on the ignition If the wipers are not in the fixed park position and the switch is in the off position (e.g. after battery disconnection), the BSI drives the wiper motors at low speed until the blades reach the fixed park position. Except when the wipers are in service position.

Service position

The wipers can be stopped in service position to make work easier.

ACTION RESPONSE
Wiper request for up to one minute after +ACC or +APC disappears, or until a door is closed if this happens before the end of the minute. The wipers stop in the middle of the windscreen
New request under the same timing conditions, with the wipers in service position The wipers return to their initial position
