Cooling

Coolant temperature regulation

~2min read

Principle

Coolant temperature regulation is stepped. Three temperature ranges allow the Cooling Fan Unit to run at low speed, medium speed or high speed.

The temperature sensor, located on the coolant outlet housing, informs the Engine Control Module of the engine coolant temperature.

DETAILS

1 The Engine Control Module receives the engine coolant temperature sensor signal via a wired link.
The Engine Control Module transmits the engine coolant temperature and engine coolant temperature warning information on the CAN network.
2 If the temperature is between 94 and 97°.

the Engine Control Module commands low speed to the Cooling Fan Unit.

If the temperature is between 98 and 101°.

the BSI commands medium speed to the Cooling Fan Unit.

If the temperature is between 102 and 105°.

the Engine Control Module commands high speed to the Cooling Fan Unit.

3 The BSI broadcasts the engine coolant temperature information via the VAN CONFORT network.
The BSI transmits the engine coolant temperature warning information to the instrument cluster and the Multifunction display via the VAN CONFORT network.

Degraded mode

A fault in the engine coolant temperature sensor causes the following actions:

  • Cooling Fan Unit operates at high speed,
  • air conditioning compressor switched off,
  • STOP warning light and engine coolant temperature warning light illuminate on the instrument cluster (depending on version),
  • a message is displayed on the Multifunction display,
  • a fault is recorded in the Engine Control Module.
