Driving recommendations
Loading the trailer
- Distribute the load on the trailer so that the heaviest items are as close as possible to the axle, and so that the nose weight is close to, but does not exceed, the maximum permissible nose weight.
Air density decreases as altitude increases, which reduces engine power. Reduce the maximum permissible trailer weight by 10% for every 1000 metres of altitude.
See the “Technical data” section, which gives the permissible vehicle and trailer masses for your vehicle.Crosswind
- Take into account the vehicle's increased sensitivity to crosswind.
Cooling
Towing a trailer on gradients causes the coolant temperature to rise.
The fan is electrically driven, so its cooling capacity does not depend on engine speed.
- To reduce engine speed, reduce vehicle speed.
The maximum permissible trailer weight for extended driving on gradients depends on the gradient and the ambient temperature.
In all cases, pay particular attention to the coolant temperature.
If the warning light or
STOP indicator illuminates, stop the vehicle and switch off the engine as soon as possible.
Brakes
When towing a trailer, the braking distance increases.
To limit brake overheating, especially when descending mountain roads, it is recommended to use engine braking.
Tyres
- Check the tyre pressures of the towing vehicle and the trailer, observing the recommended values.
Lighting
- Check the lights and indicators on the trailer.
