Jump starting the engine using another vehicle's battery

~1min read

To jump start the engine using another vehicle's battery, you will need suitable heavy-gauge jumper cables, available from an Authorised Dealer. If you already have jumper cables, make sure they are in good condition.

Both batteries must have the same rated voltage: 12 V.

The battery supplying power must have a capacity (ampere-hours, Ah) at least equal to the rated capacity of the discharged battery.

Check carefully that the two vehicles are not in direct contact (connecting the positive terminals creates a risk of short circuit) and that the discharged battery is connected correctly. Switch off the ignition of the vehicle receiving power.

Start the engine of the vehicle supplying power. It should run at medium speed.

Connect the positive (+) cable A to the positive (+) terminal 1 of the discharged battery, then to the positive (+) terminal 2 of the battery supplying power.

Connect the negative (-) cable 8 to the negative (-) terminal 3 of the battery supplying power, then to the negative (-) terminal 4 of the discharged battery.

Start the engine normally. As soon as the engine starts, disconnect cables A and 8 in reverse order (4-3-2-1).

Check that cables A and 8 do not touch each other and that the positive cable A does not touch any metal part of the vehicle supplying power. Risk of serious injury and/or vehicle damage.
