Preliminary Inspection
GENERAL INFORMATION.
Vibrations felt through the steering wheel are not always caused by incorrect wheel alignment angles. Wheel imbalance may also be a possible cause..
An additional check is a straight-line stability test. A tendency of the vehicle to drift sideways on a level horizontal road with the steering wheel released may be caused by
uneven tire wear or damage. Before checking wheel alignment, perform the following preparatory operations.
Inspection
PROCEDURE.
1. Check the tire air pressure and tread wear on all tires..
2. Check wheel hub bearing play..
3. Check play in the steering linkage ball joints. If the joints are worn, replace
the parts before checking and adjusting wheel alignment.
4. Check wheel runout..
5. Check the static suspension deflection (ride height) and the angular position of the body. If
necessary, correct before adjusting toe-in..
6. Check the mounting security of the rack and pinion steering gear to the vehicle body..
7. Check the condition of the front strut assemblies..
8. Check the mounting security of the front lower control arms..
9. Constant vehicle load. If the vehicle is regularly operated with this load, it must also be present when checking wheel alignment
angles..
10. The vehicle must be positioned on a level, horizontal surface without
longitudinal or transverse slope..
The following conditions must be met for correct alignment of the front and rear wheels.
1) All tires must be in the same condition and have the same tread pattern. Tires must be fully serviceable..
2) Air pressure in all wheels must be the same..
3) Check the condition of the rims of all wheels. Rims must be undamaged. 4) Place a load of 70 kg on each front seat..
5) The fuel tank must be half full..
6) Rock the vehicle several times to allow the wheel suspensions to settle into their static position.
