STARTING AND OPERATING

Towing Requirements

~2min read

To ensure proper break-in of your new vehicle's drivetrain components, observe the following recommendations.

  • Make sure cargo is secured in the trailer and will not shift during travel. When towing cargo that is not fully secured, dynamic shifting of the load may occur, which may be difficult for the driver to control. You may lose control of the vehicle and be involved in an accident.
  • Do not overload the vehicle when carrying cargo or towing a trailer. Overloading may result in loss of control, reduced performance, or damage to the brakes, axles, engine, transmission, steering, suspension, chassis structure, or tires.
  • Safety chains must always be used between the vehicle and trailer. Always connect the chains to the hitch hook retainers. Cross the chains under the trailer tongue and leave enough slack for turns.
  • Vehicles with trailers must not be parked on an incline. When parking, apply the parking brake of the towing vehicle. Place the towing vehicle transmission in PARK. Always block or chock the trailer wheels.
  • GCWR must not be exceeded.
  • The total weight must be distributed between the towing vehicle and trailer so that the following four ratings are not exceeded:
    • The maximum load is shown on the Tire and Loading Information label.
    • GTW
    • GAWR
    • Rated tongue load of the hitch used.

Perform the maintenance specified in the Scheduled Maintenance section to ensure proper service intervals. When towing a trailer, never exceed the GAWR or GCWR.

  • Never tow a trailer during the first 500 miles (805 km) of operation of a new vehicle. The engine, axle, or other components may be damaged.
  • Then, during the first 500 miles (805 km) of towing a trailer, do not drive faster than 50 mph (80 km/h) and do not operate the engine at full throttle. This promotes more intensive wear of the engine and other vehicle components. Loads.
