Description and Operation - Exterior Lighting - Overview
Overview
Headlamps
For low series halogen headlamps, the headlamp system is a four-beam pattern system. It consists of replaceable low beam and high beam bulbs in each headlamp assembly. The side marker light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are integrated into the headlamp unit and are not replaceable. The front turn/park lamp is integrated into the headlamp assembly and is an individually replaceable bulb.
For mid series halogen headlamps, the headlamp system is a four-beam pattern system. It consists of replaceable low beam and high beam bulbs in each headlamp assembly. The side marker light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are integrated into the headlamp unit and are not replaceable. The front turn lamp is integrated into the headlamp assembly and is an individually replaceable bulb. The DRL LED / front side marker lights are non-replaceable LEDs installed in the headlamp assembly.
The LED headlamp system is a four-beam system. It consists of non-replaceable LED low beam and high beam lights in each headlamp assembly. The front turn signal and DRL LED / front side marker lights are non-replaceable LEDs installed in the headlamp assembly.
When the left multifunction switch on the steering column is briefly pressed, the high beam light-emitting diodes (LEDs) turn on briefly for the flash-to-pass function. If the left steering column multifunction switch is moved to the high beam position, the high beam LEDs remain on until the left steering column multifunction switch returns to the center position.
For China, halogen headlamps are equipped with manual headlamp aiming. The aiming amount is adjusted using the headlamp switch.
For China, LED headlamps are equipped with an automatic headlamp levelling control. Headlamp beam height is adjusted automatically depending on vehicle load, speed, acceleration and braking. The automatic headlamp levelling control is activated when the headlamp switch is in the HEADLAMPS or AUTOLAMPS position.
DRL
For low series halogen headlamps, the DRL system illuminates the low beam lamp at reduced intensity.
For mid series halogen and LED headlamps, the DRL system illuminates the DRL LED / front side marker lights at full intensity in the headlamp assembly when the ignition is on, the headlamp switch is in the OFF or AUTOLAMPS position, and the headlamps have not been turned on by the automatic lighting system.
Automatic Headlamps
The autolamp system provides light-sensitive automatic control of exterior lights on and off. When ambient light is low enough and the headlamp switch is in the AUTOLAMPS position, the exterior park and low beam lamps turn on. The autolamp system keeps the exterior lamps on for a set period of time after the ignition is turned off (20 seconds is the factory default). The preselected time is adjustable from 0 to approximately 2 minutes using the IPC message center controls.
Brake Lamps
The brake lamp switch is located on the brake pedal assembly. The rear lamps and the high mounted stop lamp illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed. Refer to the applicable wiring diagram.
Turn Signal and Hazard Warning
The left multifunction switch on the steering column has 2 detents for the left turn position and 2 detents for the right turn position. When placed in the first detent and released, the corresponding turn signals flash 3 times and turn off. When the left steering column multifunction switch is moved to the second detent, the turn signal flashes until the steering wheel is turned in the opposite direction and the clock spring (vehicles without adaptive steering) or the SCCM (vehicles with adaptive steering) mechanically returns the left steering column multifunction switch to the neutral position and cancels the turn signal.
For halogen low and mid series headlamps, the front turn/park lamp is integrated into the headlamp assembly and is an individually replaceable bulb.
For LED headlamps, the front turn signal is a non-replaceable light-emitting diode (LED) installed in the headlamp assembly.
When the hazard function is active, all turn signals flash and turn off.
The turn signal on/off cycle time is approximately 70 cycles per minute.
If a front or rear turn signal is not working, the IPC turn indicator rapidly flashes approximately 150 times per minute to signal the driver of a burnt-out bulb (the exterior turn signals still flash approximately 70 times per minute).
The hazard warning on/off cycle time is approximately 70 cycles per minute, regardless of a burnt-out bulb.
Parking, Tail and License Plate Lamps
For low series halogen headlamps, the front turn/park lamp is integrated into the headlamp assembly and is an individually replaceable bulb.
For halogen and LED headlamps of mid-level trim, the DRL / front park lamp LED in the headlamp assembly is used as the park lamp and illuminates at reduced intensity when the park lamps or headlamps are activated. The DRL / front park lamp LEDs are non-serviceable LEDs installed in the headlamp assembly.
Park lamps are located in the headlamps, tail lamps and license plate lamps.
Front Fog Lamps
The front fog lamps can be activated with the ignition on by placing the headlamp switch in any position other than OFF and pressing the front fog lamp switch.
Rear fog lamp - China only
The rear fog lamp can be activated with the ignition on by placing the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS position and pressing the rear fog lamp switch. The rear fog lamp is located in the rear bumper.
Back-Up Lamps
When the transmission is in REVERSE, the left and right back-up lamps illuminate.
Trailer Lamps
The TRM supplies voltage to the trailer stop/turn lamps when a request to activate the vehicle stop or turn lamps is received.
The TRM supplies voltage to the trailer park lamps when a request to activate the vehicle park lamps is received.
