DATA RECORDING
We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it. The information contained in this publication was correct at the time of printing, but as it changes rapidly, we recommend you visit the regional Ford website for the latest information.
Your vehicle is equipped with electronic control modules that have the function of recording data and the capability of storing data either permanently or temporarily. This data may include information on the condition and status of your vehicle, vehicle maintenance requirements, events and malfunctions. The types of data that may be recorded are described in this section. Some recorded data is stored in event logs or fault logs.
Recorded data includes, for example:
- Operating conditions of system components, for example fuel level, tire pressure and battery charge level.
- Vehicle and component status, for example wheel rotation speed, deceleration, lateral acceleration and seat belt status.
- Events or malfunctions in important systems, for example headlamps and brakes.
- System response to road situations, for example airbag deployment and stability control activation.
- Environmental conditions, for example temperature.
Some of this data, when used in combination with other information, for example an accident report, vehicle damage or eyewitness statements, may be linked to a specific individual.
Service Data
The service data recorders in your vehicle are capable of collecting and storing diagnostic information about your vehicle. This may include information on the operation or condition of various systems and modules in the vehicle, such as the engine, throttle, steering or brake system. To properly diagnose and service your vehicle, Ford Motor Company (Ford of Canada in Canada) and service and repair facilities may access or exchange with each other diagnostic vehicle information obtained through a direct connection to your vehicle during diagnosis or service of your vehicle. In addition, Ford Motor Company (Ford of Canada, in Canada) may, where permitted by law, use diagnostic information to improve vehicles or combine it with other information we may hold about you, for example your contact information, to offer you products or services that may interest you. Data may be provided to our service providers, such as parts suppliers, who may help diagnose malfunctions and who are also obligated to protect data. We keep this data only for as long as necessary to perform these functions or comply with the law. We may provide information when required in response to official requests from law enforcement or other government authorities or third parties acting under legal authority or court order, and such information may be used in legal proceedings. United States only (where applicable): if you choose to use connected apps and services, you agree that certain diagnostic information may also be made available electronically by Ford Motor Company and authorized Ford service facilities, and that diagnostic information may be used to provide services to you, personalize your experience, troubleshoot and improve products and services, and offer you products and services that may interest you, where permitted by law. Canada only: For more information, see the Ford of Canada privacy policy at www.ford.ca, including data storage in the United States and use of service providers in other jurisdictions, which may be subject to legal requirements in Canada, the United States and other applicable countries, for example lawful requirements to disclose personal information to government authorities in those countries.
Event Data
This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The main purpose of the EDR is to record data in certain crash or near-crash situations, such as airbag deployment or collision with a road obstacle. This data helps to understand how the vehicle systems performed. The EDR is designed to record vehicle dynamics and safety system data for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The event data recorder in this vehicle is designed to record data such as:
- How various systems in your vehicle were performing;
- Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fastened;
- How hard, if at all, the driver pressed the accelerator pedal and/or brake pedal; and
- How fast the vehicle was traveling; and
- Where the driver was holding the steering wheel.
These data can help provide a better understanding of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur.
Special equipment is required to read the data recorded by the EDR, and access to the vehicle or EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as law enforcement, that have such special equipment can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or EDR.
Comfort, Convenience and Entertainment
Your vehicle is equipped with electronic control units that can store data according to your personal settings. Data is stored locally in the vehicle or on devices you connect to it, such as a USB drive or digital music player. You can delete some of this data and choose whether to share it through services you subscribe to. See Settings.
Comfort and Convenience Data
Recorded data includes, for example:
- Seat and steering wheel positions.
- Climate control settings.
- Radio presets.
Entertainment Data
Recorded data includes, for example:
- Music, video or album cover art.
- Contacts and related address book entries.
- Navigation destinations.

Vehicles with a Modem
The modem contains a SIM card. The modem was activated when your vehicle was built and periodically sends messages to stay connected to the cellular network, receive automatic software updates and send us vehicle information, such as diagnostic information. These messages may contain information that identifies your vehicle, the SIM card and the modem electronic serial number. Cellular service providers may have access to additional information, such as cell tower identification. For more information about our privacy policy, visit www.FordConnected.com or contact your local Ford website.
Vehicles with SYNC
Mobile Device Data
If you connect a mobile device to your vehicle, you can display data from your device on the touchscreen, such as music and album art. You can share your vehicle data with mobile applications on your device through the system. See Applications.
The mobile applications feature works when your connected device sends data to us. In the United States, the data is encrypted and includes the vehicle identification number, the SYNC module serial number, odometer reading, enabled applications, usage statistics and debugging information. We store it only as long as necessary to provide services, troubleshoot, continuously improve and offer you products and services that may interest you, according to your preferences and where permitted by law.
If you connect a cellular phone to the system, the system creates a profile that links to this mobile phone. The cellular phone profile allows use of more mobile features and efficient operation. The profile contains, for example, data from your phone book, read and unread text messages and call history, including call history recorded when your mobile phone was not connected to the system.
If you connect a media device, the system creates and stores an index of the supported media content on the media device. The system also records a short diagnostic log of approximately 10 minutes of all recent system activity.
The cellular phone profile, media device index and diagnostic log remain in the memory of your vehicle unless you delete them, and they are normally accessible only in your vehicle when the mobile phone or media device is connected. If you no longer plan to use the system or your vehicle, we recommend that you use the master reset feature to erase stored information. See Settings.
Access to system data is not possible without special equipment and access to your vehicle's module.
