Fuel Tank and Lines — Overview. Description and Operation

Fuel System

NOTICE: Fuel system repairs must only be made by replacing the failed component(s). Do not attempt to repair fuel system components.

NOTICE: If specified during fuel system component assembly, lubricate any seals only with the specified material. Failure to follow this instruction may result in seal failure and fuel leakage.

The fuel tank and lines consist of the following:

  • Single-tank (L-shaped) fuel tank.
  • lifetime fuel filter in the tank (serviced as part of the fuel pump).
  • Easy Fuel™ fuel tank filler tube (capless), which cannot be modified in any way and is serviced only as a complete fuel tank filler neck replacement.
  • fuel lines (liquid and vapor).
  • FPDM
  • fuel tank pressure sensor (part of the fuel vapor tube assembly).
  • fuel pump and sender.

Vehicles:

  • Has a fuel level sensor installed on the fuel pump module.
  • Has a fuel tank filler neck that contains a restrictor, allowing only unleaded fuel to be pumped into the fuel tank.
  • have an Easy Fuel™ fuel tank filler neck (capless), which cannot be modified in any way.
  • has an optional refueling adapter located in the luggage compartment.
  • have a lifetime fuel filter in the fuel tank; the fuel filter is serviced as part of the fuel pump.
  • have fuel lines (liquid and vapor) bundled together with the brake lines, mounted on the underside of the floor pan and covered by a protective shield.
  • have spring-lock quick connections on the fuel lines.
  • have a FPDM that shuts off the fuel supply in the event of a collision.

Fuel pump shut-off function

The event notification feature provides other vehicle subsystems with information related to SRS deployment or fuel shutoff status. When an impact exceeding a predetermined threshold occurs, the RCM sends a signal to the BCM over a dedicated circuit.

When the BCM receives a fault input signal from the RCM, the BCM initiates fuel shutoff by removing the ground signal from the fuel pump relay, and also sends a signal to the PCM over a dedicated circuit, disabling the fuel system.

After the fuel system has been disabled, the vehicle can be restarted by performing the following steps:

  • Turn the ignition OFF.
  • Turn the ignition to the START position (on vehicles with a pushbutton start, press the START/STOP button while depressing the brake pedal).
  • Turn the ignition OFF.
  • Turn the ignition on.
