Safety Canopy™

~2min read

The curtain airbag deploys during certain severe side impacts or when a rollover event is detected by the roll sensor. The curtain airbag is mounted to the metal roof side rails, behind the headliner, above each seat row. In certain side impacts or rollover events, the curtain airbag will deploy regardless of which seats are occupied. The curtain airbag is designed to inflate between the side window area and the occupants to further enhance protection in side impact and rollover events.

Ford Fusion. Safety Canopy™

The system consists of the following:

  • Inflatable safety canopies are located above the trim panel of the front and rear side windows, identified by a label or lettering on the headliner or roof pillar trim.
  • Flexible headliner that opens from above the side doors for inflatable curtain airbag deployment.
  • Ford Fusion. Safety Canopy™Crash Sensors and Airbag Warning Indicator.

Properly restrain children 12 years old and under in rear seats. The safety canopy will not interfere with properly installed child restraints or booster seats, because it is designed to inflate downward from the headliner above the door along the side window opening.

The design and development of the curtain airbag restraint system includes recommended test procedures developed by a group of recognized automotive safety experts known as the Side Airbag Technical Working Group. These recommended test procedures help reduce the risk of injuries associated with side airbag deployment (including the curtain airbag).
