Brakes

General Information

DANGER

The system does not relieve the driver of the responsibility to drive with due care and attention.

Note: Occasional brake noise is normal. If there is continuous metal-on-metal noise, squealing or grinding, the brake pads may be worn. If the vehicle vibrates continuously or the steering wheel judders during braking, have the vehicle checked by an authorised dealer.

Note: Brake dust may build up on the wheels, even under normal driving conditions. Some dust is unavoidable due to brake wear. See Cleaning the wheels.

Note: Depending on the laws and regulations in force in the country for which the vehicle was originally built, the brake lights may flash during hard braking. As a result, the hazard warning lights may also flash once the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

Wet brakes result in reduced braking efficiency. After leaving a car wash or driving through standing water, gently press the brake pedal several times to dry the brakes.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

This system helps the driver maintain steering control during emergency braking by preventing the wheels from locking.

ABS driving tips

The anti-lock braking system does not eliminate the following risks:
  • If the distance to the vehicle ahead is excessively short.
  • In the presence of aquaplaning.
  • If the vehicle speed in corners is excessive.
  • If the road surface is in poor condition.
Note: If the system activates, the brake pedal may vibrate and have a longer travel. Keep steady pressure on the brake pedal. A noise from the system may also be heard. This is normal.
