Vehicle Maintenance

Exterior Cleaning

~4min read
Wash the vehicle regularly with cold or lukewarm water and a pH-neutral detergent.
  • Never use aggressive household cleaners or soaps, such as dishwashing or laundry detergents. These products can discolour and stain painted surfaces.
  • Avoid washing the vehicle when the body is very hot to the touch or when it is exposed to direct or very strong sunlight.
  • Dry the vehicle with a chamois leather or a soft sponge cloth to remove water droplets.
  • Remove fuel residue, bird droppings, insects and road tar immediately. Over time, these substances can damage the paintwork or the vehicle's coatings.
  • Remove all external accessories (e.g. antennas) before entering a car wash.
  • If AdBlue is spilled during topping up, remove any residue from painted surfaces immediately.
Note: Suntan lotions and insect repellents can damage painted surfaces. If these substances come into contact with the vehicle, wash the affected area immediately.

Note: If you use a car wash with a wax cycle, make sure to remove the wax from the windscreen and the wiper blades.

Note: Before entering a car wash, make sure it is suitable for the vehicle.

Note: Some car washes use high-pressure water. After using such systems, water droplets may enter the vehicle and damage some parts of the vehicle.

Note: Remove the antenna before entering an automatic car wash.

Note: Switch off the blower motor to prevent contamination of the cabin air filter.

It is recommended to wash the vehicle with a sponge and lukewarm water containing a car shampoo.

Headlamp Cleaning

Note: Do not scrape the headlamps.

Note: Do not use abrasive substances, alcohol-based solvents or chemical solvents to clean the headlamps.

Note: Do not rub the headlamps when they are dry.

Rear Window Cleaning

Note: Do not scrape the inside of the rear window.

Note: do not use abrasive substances, alcohol-based solvents or chemical solvents to clean the inside of the rear window.

Clean the inside of the rear window using a soft, lint-free cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner.

Cleaning chrome components

Note: Do not use abrasive products or chemical solvents. Use water and soap.

Note: Do not apply cleaning products to hot surfaces and do not leave such products on chrome surfaces for longer than recommended.

Note: Over time, aggressive industrial cleaners or chemical cleaning products may cause damage.

Cleaning stripes or graphic decals

Although hand washing is preferable, pressure washing systems may be used provided the following conditions are met:
  • The water pressure must not exceed 14,000 kPa.
  • Do not use water at a temperature above 82°C.
  • Use a wide-angle spray nozzle, 40°.
  • Keep the nozzle 305 mm from the vehicle surface, at a 90° angle to the surface.
Note: If the nozzle is held at an angle to the vehicle surface, graphic decals may be damaged and peel at the edges.

Protecting the body paint

Remove frequently any deposits such as bird droppings, tree resin, insect remains, tar, road salt or industrial fallout to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

Wash the underbody of the vehicle frequently if you drive on roads where road salt is spread.

It is recommended to apply paint wax once or twice a year.

Note: do not apply polish in direct sunlight as it will dry too quickly.

Note: Avoid applying polish to plastic surfaces, as it may be difficult to remove.

Note: do not apply polish to the windshield or rear window. Polish on the windshield or on the wiper blades may increase noise while wiping, reduce wiping quality or impair the rain sensor performance.
