Automatic Parking Assist (APA)

~3min read

If equipped, APA locates and steers the vehicle into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. When using APA, the driver must still shift gears and operate the brakes and accelerator. The display and audible chimes assist the driver during parking maneuvers.

PressGMC Terrain. Automatic Parking Assist (APA)on the center console to allow the system to search for a parking space large enough and within 1.5 m (5 ft) of the vehicle. Vehicle speed must be below 30 km/h. The system cannot:

  • Determine whether the space is a legal parking space.
  • Park precisely aligned with the vehicle next to it if the space is angled or if the parking space is located at an angle.
  • Park exactly in the center of the space that is marked as too large.
  • Always detect short curbs.

When enabled, APA searches for parallel parking spaces on the right side of the vehicle. To search for a parking space on the left, activate the left turn signal or, if equipped, change the side selection on the infotainment display. To switch the parking mode between parallel and perpendicular, press and holdGMC Terrain. Automatic Parking Assist (APA)during the search or, if available, change the parking mode on the infotainment display.

After the vehicle has fully passed a large enough space, a chime sounds and the red stop symbol is displayed.

If the vehicle is in R (Reverse) but does not move into the expected space, this may be because the system is maneuvering the vehicle into a previously detected space. The APA system does not need service.

APA will command the vehicle to stop as soon as a large enough space is found. Follow the displayed instructions. When instructed to reverse, shift to R (Reverse) to activate automatic steering. The steering wheel will vibrate briefly as a reminder to take your hands off the steering wheel. Check the surroundings and continue braking or accelerating as needed and be ready to stop to avoid vehicles, pedestrians, or objects.

If vehicle speed exceeds 10 km/h, APA is automatically disabled and automatic steering will turn off. The progress arrow displays the status of the parking maneuver. Depending on the space size, additional maneuvers may be required, and additional instructions will be given. When shifting gears, allow automatic steering to complete before continuing the parking maneuver. After the maneuver is successfully completed, APA will sound a chime and display the PARKING COMPLETE message. Place the vehicle in P (Park).

APA may automatically turn off if:

  • The steering wheel is being used by the driver.
  • The maximum allowable speed is exceeded.
  • A malfunction occurs in the APA system.
  • Electronic Stability Control or the Antilock Brake System is activated.
  • A high-priority vehicle message is displayed in the Driver Information Center (DIC).

To cancel APA, pressGMC Terrain. Automatic Parking Assist (APA)again.

When the System Does Not Operate Properly

The APA system may require a short period of driving on curves to calibrate.
