Engine Oil Level Check
All engines consume some engine oil during operation. This is considered normal. Therefore, check the engine oil level regularly, for example, each time you refuel. Be sure to check the engine oil level before a long trip.
Engine oil consumption depends on driving style, as well as climate and road conditions. Oil consumption of up to approximately 1 liter per 1000 km is considered normal. A new engine may consume somewhat more oil during the break-in period.
To check the engine oil level, park the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface. Check the engine oil level with the engine warm.
Before starting the check, turn off the engine and wait approximately 3 minutes.

1. Pull out the engine oil dipstick with the orange handle.

Remove the dipstick carefully to avoid spilling engine oil. Spilled oil may damage equipment located in the engine compartment.
2. Wipe the dipstick dry with a clean cloth or paper towel.
3. Insert the dipstick into the tube and push it in as far as it will go.

4. Pull out the dipstick again and check the engine oil level. The level should be between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick.

If the oil level is near or below the lower mark on the dipstick, add engine oil as described in "Adding Engine Oil" on page 442 for gasoline engines and on page 444 for diesel engines.
