If a collision is severe enough to deploy the front airbags, the seat belt pretensioners will deploy at the same time. The pretensioners will also deploy if there is a risk of the vehicle rolling over.
If the side airbags or curtain airbags deploy in a collision, the seat belt pretensioner on the corresponding side of the vehicle will also deploy at the same time.
The seat belt pretensioners may deploy in some collisions even if the front airbags do not deploy. There are collisions in which airbag deployment is not necessary, but additional seat belt tensioning is beneficial.
After the pretensioners have deployed, the seat belts will remain in a tensioned state until they are unfastened.
For vehicles equipped with the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
If there is no passenger in the front seat and the seat belt is not fastened, the seat belt pretensioner for that seat will not deploy.
If there is a malfunction in the automatic seat belt pretensioners, the airbag system warning light on the instrument panel will illuminate.
