Seat belt with pretensioner (if equipped)

~3min read

The vehicle is equipped with belts with pretensioners on the driver's and passenger's sides (Retractor Pretensioner and EFD (Emergency Fixing Device)). Belts with pretensioners may activate in accidents involving severe frontal collisions.

If the vehicle stops suddenly or if the occupant leans forward too quickly, the retractor locks in position. In some frontal collisions, the pretensioner activates and tightens the contact between the belt and the occupant's body.

(1) Retractor Pretensioner

The purpose of this Retractor Pretensioner is to ensure that the belt tightens over the upper body of the occupant in certain types of frontal collision.

(2) EFD (Emergency Fixing Device)

The purpose of the EFD is to ensure that the lower part of the belt tightens over the lower part of the occupant's body in certain types of frontal collision (if equipped, driver only).

If the system detects excessive belt tension when the pretensioner activates, the load limiter inside the retractor pretensioner slightly releases the pressure in the affected belt (if equipped).

WARNING - Pretensioners are designed to work only once. After activation, belts with pretensioners must be replaced. Seat belts of any type must always be replaced after they have been worn in a collision. - Pretensioner mechanisms heat up when activated. Do not touch pretensioner parts for several minutes after they have been activated. - Do not strike the parts of the belts with pretensioners. - Do not attempt to inspect or replace belts with pretensioners yourself. It is recommended that the system be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. - Do not attempt to service or repair belts with pretensioners yourself in any way. - Improper handling of the belt pretensioner parts and failure to observe the warning not to strike, modify, inspect, replace, service or repair the belt parts may cause improper operation or unintentional activation, resulting in injury. - If the vehicle or seat with pretensioner must be scrapped, it is recommended that you contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Cintura con pretensionatore (se in dotazione)

The pretensioner consists of the following components. Their location is shown in the figure:

1. SRS airbag warning light

2. Retractor pretensioner lock

3. SRS control module

4. Emergency Fixing Device (EFD)*

* : if equipped, driver only

NOTE

Since the sensor that activates the SRS airbag is connected to the pretensioner, its warning light in the instrument cluster illuminates for about 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON, then goes out.

If the pretensioner does not operate correctly, the warning light also illuminates even if there are no SRS airbag malfunctions. If the light does not come on, stays on, or comes on while the vehicle is driving, it is recommended that the belts with pretensioners and/or SRS airbags be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

NOTE

- The pretensioner activates not only in frontal collisions but also in side collisions, if the vehicle is equipped with a curtain or side airbag.

- When the belts are activated, a clear click can be heard and fine dust, similar to smoke, may be visible on the passenger's side.

These are normal operating conditions and are not dangerous.

- Although it is non-toxic, this dust may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for long periods.

Wash all exposed areas of skin after an accident in which the pretensioner has activated.
