Tongue Weight

~1min read

Tongue weight is important because it affects the gross vehicle weight (GVW). Tongue weight must not exceed 10% of the total loaded trailer weight.

After loading the trailer, weigh the trailer separately and then the tongue to determine whether the weights are correct. If they are not, correct them by moving some items within the trailer.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions:

  • Never load the trailer so that more weight is toward the rear than the front. The front should carry approximately 60% of the total trailer load and the rear approximately 40%.
  • Never exceed the maximum trailer weight or the towing device limits. Improper loading may damage the vehicle and/or cause injury. Check weights and load distribution at a commercial scale or at a police station equipped with scales.
