Driver and Passenger Front Airbags

Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags?

Your vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and seat belts/shoulder belts at the driver and front passenger seating positions.

The SRS consists of airbags located in the center of the steering wheel for the driver, below the lower steering column cover, and in the front passenger side of the instrument panel above the glove box.

The airbags are identified by the embossed words "AIR BAG" on the airbag cover.

The purpose of the SRS is to provide the driver and front passengers with additional protection beyond what the seat belt system alone offers in a frontal collision of sufficient severity.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death resulting from front airbag deployment, observe the following precautions:

  • Always wear your seat belt to help keep occupants properly positioned.
  • Move your seat as far back from the front airbags as possible while still maintaining control of the vehicle.
  • Never lean against the door or center console.
  • Do not allow the front passenger to place their feet or legs on the instrument panel.
  • No objects (such as an emergency warning triangle cover, mobile phone holder, cup holder, air freshener, or stickers) should be placed over or near the airbag modules in the steering wheel, instrument panel, windshield, and front passenger panel above the glove box. Such objects can cause injury if the vehicle is in a collision severe enough to deploy the airbags.
  • Do not attach any objects to the windshield or the inside rearview mirror.

Front Passenger Airbag ON/OFF Switch

Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags?

The purpose of the switch is to deactivate the front passenger airbag when transporting passengers who are at increased risk of airbag-related injury due to age, size, or medical condition.

Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags?

To deactivate the front passenger airbag:

Insert the key or a similar hard tool into the front passenger airbag ON/OFF switch and turn it to the OFF position. The passenger airbag OFF indicator (Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags?) will illuminate and remain on until the front passenger airbag is reactivated.

Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags?

To activate the front passenger airbag:

Insert the key or a similar hard tool into the front passenger airbag ON/OFF switch and turn it to the ON position. The passenger airbag ON indicator (Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags?) will illuminate and remain on for 60 seconds.

Information

The front passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator illuminates for approximately 4 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.

WARNING

Never allow an adult passenger to ride in the front passenger seat when the passenger airbag OFF indicator is illuminated. During a collision, the airbag will not inflate if the indicator is lit. Turn on the front passenger airbag or have your passenger move to the rear seat.

WARNING

If the front passenger airbag ON/OFF switch malfunctions, the following conditions may occur:

  • The airbag warning light ( Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags? ) on the instrument cluster will illuminate.
  • The passenger airbag OFF indicator ( Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags? ) will not illuminate and the ON indicator ( Hyundai i30. Where are the air bags? ) will illuminate and go off after approximately 60 seconds. The front passenger airbag will inflate in a frontal collision even though the front passenger airbag ON/OFF switch is set to the OFF position.
  • We recommend that an Authorized HYUNDAI Service Center inspect the front passenger airbag ON/OFF switch and the SRS airbag system as soon as possible.
