Repair Procedures

ITEM

Battery Charge

In general, the vehicle battery charging system has three forms.
  1. Constant current charging: Battery voltage gradually increases while charging with a constant current. If time and current are not properly controlled, the battery will be overcharged, so charging must be stopped after confirming the end of charge.
    • Slow charge: charging the battery for a long time with a low current
    • Quick charge: charging the battery for a short time with a high current
  2. Constant voltage charging: Battery charging current is gradually reduced while charging with a constant voltage.
  3. Constant current - constant voltage charging: Charging with constant current and constant voltage to protect the battery from damage.
    1. Initial stage: constant current charging
    2. Final stage: constant voltage charging

DEPOSIT

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Remove the air duct. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
  3. Disconnect the positive (+) battery terminal (A).
    1. Remove the battery insulation plates.
    2. Remove the battery (A) after removing the battery mounting bracket (B).
    3. Remove the battery tray (A) after removing the bolts.

    REMEDY

    1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Battery (+) terminal installation: 4.0 ~ 6 N·m Battery (+) terminal installation: 7.8 ~ 9.8 N·m Battery mounting bracket and battery insulation slide installation: 8.8 ~ 13.7 N·m Battery tray mounting bolts: 8.8 ~ 13.7 N·m

    Vehicle Dark Current Check

    1. Turn off all electrical devices, then turn off the ignition switch.
    2. Close all doors except the hood, then lock all doors.
      1. Disconnect the hood switch connector.
      2. Close the trunk.
      3. Close the doors or remove the door switches.
    3. Wait several minutes for the vehicle's electrical systems to go to sleep.
    4. Connect an ammeter in series between the negative (-) battery terminal and the ground cable, then slowly disconnect the clamp from the negative (-) battery terminal.
    5. Read the current value on the ammeter.
      • If the dark current is higher than the limit value, check for an abnormal circuit by removing the fuses one at a time and monitoring the dark current.
      • Connect only the fuse of the suspected parasitic dark current circuit, and locate the suspected unit by removing the component connected to the circuit until the dark current drops below the limit value.

Limit value (after 10–20 min): Below 50 mA

    CLEANING

    1. Make sure the ignition switch and all accessories are in the OFF position.
    2. Disconnect the battery cables (negative terminal first).
    3. Remove the battery from the vehicle.
    4. Make sure the battery holder is not damaged by electrolyte loss. If it is, clean the affected area with a solution of clean warm water and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Scrub the area with a stiff brush and wipe it with a cloth dampened with the baking soda solution.
    5. Clean the top of the battery with the solution described above.
    6. Check the top of the battery case and its cover for cracks. If there are cracks, replace the battery.
    7. Clean the terminals with a suitable tool.
    8. Clean the inside surface of the connector clamps with a suitable tool. Replace worn or damaged cables and broken connector clamps.
    9. Install the battery in the vehicle.
    10. Connect the terminals to the battery terminals, making sure the tops of the terminals and posts are flush.
    11. Tighten the flange nuts to the specified torque.
    12. Coat all connections with petroleum jelly after tightening.
