Tongue load is an important measurement to consider, as it affects the gross vehicle weight (GVW). The trailer tongue should weigh no less than 10% and no more than 15% of the total loaded trailer weight, within the maximum allowable tongue load.

After loading the trailer, weigh the trailer and the tongue separately to check that the load is correct. If not, correct the problem by moving items in the trailer.

WARNING

Observe the following precautions:

  • The load should never be heavier at the rear of the trailer than at the front. The front of the trailer should always carry approx. 60% of the total trailer load, and the remaining 40% should be at the rear.
  • Never exceed the maximum trailer weight or towing equipment ratings. Improper loading may damage the vehicle or injure its occupants. Check weight and loading at certified scales or at a weigh station equipped with a balance.
