Opening the Tailgate

Make sure the vehicle is in P (Park) and apply the parking brake.

Then perform one of the following:

1. Unlock all doors using the door unlock button on the remote key or smart key. Press the button on the liftgate handle and open the liftgate.

2. Press and hold the liftgate open button on the remote key or smart key. Press the button on the liftgate handle and open the liftgate.

3. With the smart key on you, press the button on the liftgate handle and open the tailgate.

Closing the Tailgate

Lower the liftgate and press down until it latches. To make sure the liftgate is securely latched, always check by trying to lift it again without pressing the button on the liftgate handle.

WARNING

Always keep the trunk lid fully closed while driving the vehicle. If it is left open or partially open, toxic exhaust gases containing carbon monoxide (CO) may enter the vehicle, which may cause serious illness or death.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the liftgate lift cylinders and attached equipment, always close the liftgate before driving.

Information

In cold and humid climates, the liftgate lock and liftgate mechanisms may not operate properly due to freezing conditions.

WARNING

Do not hold the part (gas strut) that supports the liftgate. Be aware that deformation of this part may cause damage to the vehicle and risk of injury.

WARNING

  • NEVER allow anyone to occupy the cargo area of the vehicle at any time. If the liftgate is partially or fully latched and a person cannot get out, serious injury or death may result from lack of ventilation, exhaust gases, rapid heating, or exposure to cold weather conditions. The cargo area is also a very dangerous place in the vehicle in a collision, because it is not a protected passenger space and is part of the vehicle's crush zone.
  • Your vehicle should be locked and keys should be kept out of the reach of children. Parents should inform their children of the dangers of playing in the cargo area.

Emergency Release of the Power Tailgate

Your vehicle is equipped with a liftgate emergency release lever located at the bottom of the liftgate. If someone is accidentally locked in the cargo area, the liftgate can be opened by performing the following steps:

1. Remove the cover.

2. Slide the release lever to the right with the key.

3. Lift the tailgate.

WARNING

  • In an emergency, be fully aware of the location of the liftgate emergency release lever in the vehicle and how to open the liftgate if you are accidentally locked in the cargo area.
  • No one should be allowed to occupy the cargo area of the vehicle at any time. The cargo area is a very dangerous place in the event of a collision.
  • Use the release lever only in emergencies. Use with extreme caution, especially while the vehicle is moving.
