Operating the Vehicle

Fuel-Efficient Driving Tips

~4min read

Fuel consumption of your vehicle depends mainly on your driving style, and on the time and place of driving.

Each of these factors affects the distance the vehicle can travel on one liter (gallon) of fuel. The following recommendations will help you drive your vehicle as economically as possible and thereby reduce fuel and repair costs:

• Drive the vehicle smoothly.

Accelerate moderately. Do not start off abruptly, do not shift gears by fully depressing the accelerator pedal, and maintain a steady cruising speed.
• Do not race between traffic lights.
Try to match your speed to the flow of traffic so that gear changes are not required unnecessarily. Whenever possible, avoid driving in heavy traffic. Always keep a safe distance from other vehicles so that braking is not required unnecessarily. This also reduces brake wear.
• Do not ride the brakes. The faster the vehicle travels, the more fuel it consumes. Driving at moderate speed, especially on the highway, is one of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.
• Do not ride the brakes or the clutch. This can increase fuel consumption and also accelerates wear of the related components. In addition, driving with the brake pedal partially depressed may overheat brake system components, reducing braking effectiveness and creating a risk of more serious consequences.
• Maintain your tires.

Keep them inflated to the recommended pressure.
Incorrect tire pressure, either too high or too low, causes increased tire wear. Check tire pressure at least once a month.
• Maintain correct wheel alignment. Misalignment may result from striking a curb or driving too fast over rough surfaces.

Incorrect wheel alignment leads to increased tire wear and other problems, including increased fuel consumption.
• Keep the vehicle in good condition. Following the maintenance schedule in Section 7 helps save fuel and reduce maintenance costs. If you drive under severe driving conditions, more frequent maintenance may be required (refer to Section 7 for details).
• Keep the vehicle clean. To maximize service life, keep the vehicle clean and avoid the buildup of corrosive substances. It is especially important that dirt, ice, and similar deposits do not accumulate under the underbody. These deposits increase vehicle weight, which increases fuel consumption, and also promote corrosion.
• Do not overload the vehicle. Do not carry unnecessary cargo in the vehicle. Excess weight increases fuel consumption.
• Do not let the engine idle longer than necessary. If you are waiting for something (not at a traffic light), turn off the engine and restart it when you are ready to move.
• Remember that your vehicle does not require prolonged warm-up.

After starting the engine, let it run for 10 - 20 seconds before engaging a gear. However, in cold weather, allow the engine a little longer to warm up.
• Do not overload the engine or allow it to run at excessively high speeds. Engine lugging occurs when the vehicle speed in a high gear is too low, and is felt as bucking or jerking. If this happens, select a lower gear. Engine over-revving means operating the engine at speeds above its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting to the recommended gears.
• Use the air conditioner economically. The air conditioning system consumes part of the engine power, so using this system increases fuel consumption.
• Fuel consumption also increases when windows are open at high speeds.
• Fuel consumption increases with crosswinds and headwinds. To compensate for some of these losses, reduce speed when driving in such conditions.
Maintaining the vehicle in good condition is important for both economical operation and safety. For this reason, have periodic inspections and maintenance performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING

- Stopping the engine while driving

Never stop the engine to coast downhill or at any other time when the vehicle is moving. With the engine off, the power steering and power brake systems will not function properly. Instead, without stopping the engine, select a gear that allows you to use engine braking. In addition, turning the ignition off while driving may cause the steering wheel to lock, resulting in loss of steering control and, ultimately, serious injury or death.
