Ignition Switch Position

LOCK

The steering wheel is locked to prevent theft. The ignition key can only be removed in the LOCK position.

To turn the ignition key to the LOCK position, push it in while in the ACC position and turn it to LOCK.

ACC (Accessory)

The steering wheel is unlocked and accessory electrical equipment is powered.

NOTE

If the ignition key cannot be turned to the ACC (Accessory) position, rock the steering wheel from side to side to release the locking mechanism, then turn the key.

ON

Warning lamps can be checked before starting the engine. This is the normal operating position after the engine has started.

To avoid discharging the battery, do not leave the ignition key in the ON position with the engine off.

START

To start the engine, turn the ignition key to the START position.

The crankshaft will crank until the key is released, after which the key returns to the ON position. In this position the brake warning lamp can be checked.

WARNING

- Ignition switch

• Never turn the ignition key to the LOCK or ACC position while the vehicle is moving. This will reduce steering and braking effectiveness and may cause a traffic accident.
• The steering column lock is not a substitute for the parking brake. Before leaving the driver's seat, always shift the transmission into 1st gear for a manual transmission or P (Park) for an automatic transmission, fully apply the parking brake, and stop the engine. If these precautions are not observed, the vehicle may suddenly move unexpectedly.
• Never try to reach the ignition key or other controls through the steering wheel while the vehicle is moving.
Placing your hand in this area may cause loss of vehicle control and a traffic accident, which may ultimately result in serious injury or death.
• Do not place loose objects near the driver's seat, as they may shift during driving, interfere with the driver, and cause a traffic accident.

Engine Starting

WARNING

Wear appropriate footwear when driving. Unsuitable footwear (high heels, ski boots, etc.) may prevent you from operating the brake, accelerator, and clutch pedals (if equipped).

1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Manual transmission: fully depress the clutch pedal and shift to neutral.
While holding the brake and clutch pedals depressed, turn the ignition key to START.
Automatic transmission: move the selector lever to P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal.
The engine can also be started with the selector lever in N (Neutral).
3. Turn the ignition key to the START position and hold it until the engine starts (but no longer than 10 seconds), then release it.
4. In very cold weather (below -18 °C / 0 °F) or if the vehicle has not been used for several days, let the engine idle without pressing the accelerator pedal.
Regardless of engine temperature, do not press the accelerator pedal while starting the engine.

If road conditions permit, you may try moving the lever to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving, then turn the ignition key to START to attempt to restart the engine.

Do not operate the starter motor for more than 10 seconds.

If the engine does not start or stalls after starting, wait 5–10 seconds before engaging the starter again.

Improper use of the starter may damage it.
