Child Restraint System

~4min read

Children riding in the vehicle must sit in the rear seat and always be properly secured to minimize the risk of injury in an accident, sudden stop, or sudden maneuver. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. Larger children who have outgrown a child restraint system must use one of the provided seat belts.

You must be aware of the specific requirements in your country. Child restraint systems must be properly positioned and installed on the vehicle seat. You must use commercially available child restraint systems that meet the safety standards of your country.

Child restraint systems are designed to be attached to vehicle seats using the lap portion of the seat belt, the lap portion of the lap/shoulder belt, or the upper tether anchorage and/or ISOFIX mounts.

Children may be injured or killed in an accident if their restraints are not properly secured. Infants and small children must always use a child restraint system.

Before purchasing a specific child restraint system, make sure it is suitable for your vehicle seats and seat belts, and suitable for your child. Follow all instructions provided by the manufacturer when installing the child restraint system.

WARNING

  • To ensure your child's safety, we strongly recommend installing the child restraint system in the rear seat. When installing a child restraint system on the front passenger seat, the airbag must be deactivated and set to the OFF position (if equipped, passenger airbag ON/OFF switch).
  • A seat belt or child restraint system can become very hot if left in a closed vehicle on a sunny day, even if the outside air temperature does not feel hot. Always check the seat cover and buckles before seating your child.
  • If a child restraint is not in use, store it in the luggage area or secure it with the seat belt or ISOFIX anchorage so that it will not be thrown forward in case of a sudden stop or accident.
  • All children, even those too large for child restraint systems, must ride in the rear seat.

WARNING

To reduce the possibility of serious or fatal injury:

  • Children of all ages are safer when restrained in the rear seat. A child riding in the front passenger seat may be seriously struck by the inflating airbag, which may result in serious or fatal injury.
  • Always follow the child restraint system manufacturer's instructions for installing and using the child restraint system.
  • Always make sure the child restraint system is securely fastened to the vehicle and your child is securely held in the child restraint system.
  • Never hold a child on your lap or knees while riding in the vehicle. The forces generated in a collision will tear the child from your arms and throw the child against the vehicle interior.
  • Never share a seat belt between yourself and a child. In an accident, the belt may press deeply into the child, causing serious internal injuries.
  • Never leave children unattended in the vehicle, even for a short time. The vehicle can heat up very quickly, which may cause serious injury or death to children inside the vehicle. Even very young children may unintentionally set the vehicle in motion, become entangled in the windows, or lock themselves or others inside the vehicle.
  • Never allow two children, or any two persons, to share the same seat belt.
  • Children often wriggle and change position improperly. Never allow a child to ride with the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back. Always properly position and secure children in the rear seat.
  • Never allow a child to stand or kneel on the seat or floor of a moving vehicle. In a collision or sudden stop, the child may be thrown violently inside the vehicle, which may result in serious injury.
  • Never use a car bed or child restraint system that "hangs" over the top of the seatback, as it may not provide adequate protection in the event of an accident.
  • Seat belts can become very hot, especially when the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight. Always check the seat belt buckles before fastening them over a child.
  • After an accident, we recommend having the system inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
  • If there is not enough space to install a child restraint system because of the driver's seat, install the child restraint system on the right rear seat.
