What to Do in an Emergency

Jump Starting Procedure

CAUTION - AGM battery (if equipped)

  • Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are maintenance-free, and we recommend that AGM batteries be serviced by an authorized Kia dealer. To charge an AGM battery, use only fully automatic battery chargers specifically designed for AGM batteries.
  • When replacing the AGM battery, we recommend using replacement parts from an authorized Kia dealer.
  • Do not open or remove the cover on the top of the battery. This may cause internal electrolyte leakage, which may result in serious injury.
  • If the AGM battery is reconnected or replaced, the ISG function will not operate immediately.
If you want to use the ISG function, the battery sensor must be calibrated. Leave the vehicle for approximately 4 hours with the ignition switched off.

✽ NOTICE

If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started using the battery of another vehicle and two jumper cables. Use jumper cables only with fully insulated clamp handles.

To avoid injury or damage to both vehicles, strictly follow the procedure below.

1. Make sure the auxiliary battery is 12 V and that its negative terminal is grounded.

2. If the auxiliary battery is in another vehicle, do not allow the vehicles to touch.

3. Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads.

4. Connect the jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the illustration. First connect one end of the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the discharged battery (1), then connect the other end to the positive terminal of the booster battery (2). Continue by connecting one end of the other jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery (3), then connect the other end to a solid, stationary metal point (such as the engine lifting bracket) away from the battery (4). Do not connect it to, or near, any part that moves when the engine is started. Make sure the bodies of the two vehicles do not touch; otherwise, there is a risk of short circuit.

Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything other than the correct battery terminals or the correct ground. Do not lean over the battery when connecting.

WARNING! Battery Cables

Do not connect the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the battery being discharged. Connect the cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery. Otherwise the battery may discharge, overheat and crack, releasing battery acid.

5. Start the engine of the vehicle with the booster battery and let it run at 2000 rpm, then start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery. If the first attempt to start fails, wait a few minutes before making another attempt to charge the discharged battery.

If the cause of battery discharge is not obvious, we recommend having the system checked by an authorized Kia dealer.
