Starting the Diesel Engine

~3min read

When starting a cold diesel engine, it must be preheated before starting the engine, and then warmed up before starting to drive.

1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

2. Manual transaxle: Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transmission into Neutral. Keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed while pressing the engine START/STOP button to the START position.

Dual clutch transmission: Move the shift lever to the P (Park) position. Fully depress the brake pedal.

You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in N (Neutral).

3. Press the engine START/STOP button while depressing the brake pedal.

4. Continue depressing the brake pedal until the glow plug indicator light turns off. (approximately 5 seconds)

5. The engine starts when the glow plug indicator light turns off.

✽ NOTICE

If the engine START/STOP button is pressed again during engine preheating, the engine may start.

Starting and Stopping the Engine for the Turbocharger Intercooler

1. Do not rev or accelerate the engine immediately after starting.

If the engine is cold, let it idle for a few seconds to allow sufficient lubrication to reach the turbocharger bearings.

2. After high-speed or prolonged driving under heavy load, let the engine idle for about 1 minute before turning it off.

This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is stopped.

CAUTION

Do not turn off the engine immediately after it has been under heavy load. This may cause serious damage to the engine or turbocharger.

Stopping Vehicles with a Manual Transmission

1. After parking the vehicle safely, depress the clutch pedal and brake pedal at the same time.

2. While depressing the clutch pedal and brake pedal, shift the transmission lever to the "N" position.

  • Even if the smart key is in the vehicle but far away from you, the engine may not start.
  • When the engine START/STOP button is in the ACC position or ON position, if any door is open, the system checks for the smart key. If the smart key is not in the vehicle, the message "Key not detected in vehicle" appears on the LCD display. If all doors are closed, a warning chime sounds for 5 seconds. The indicator or warning turns off while the vehicle is moving. Always keep the smart key with you.

WARNING

The engine will start only when the smart key is inside the vehicle.

Never allow children or persons unfamiliar with the vehicle to touch the engine START/STOP button or related components.

CAUTION

If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift the shift lever to the P (Park) position. If traffic and road conditions permit, you may shift the lever to N (Neutral) when the vehicle is moving and press the engine START/STOP button to attempt restarting the engine.

✽ NOTICE

  • If the battery is discharged or the smart key is malfunctioning, you can start the engine by pressing the engine START/STOP button with the smart key. The key's lock button side must make direct contact. When pressing the engine START/STOP button directly with the smart key, the smart key must touch the button at a right angle.
  • When the stop lamp fuse has blown, the engine cannot be started normally. Replace the fuse with a new one. If this is not possible, you can start the engine by pressing the engine START/STOP button for 10 seconds while in the ACC position. The engine may start without depressing the brake pedal. However, for your safety, always depress the brake and clutch pedals (if equipped) before starting the engine.

CAUTION

Do not press the engine start/stop button for more than 10 seconds, except when the stop lamp fuse has blown.
