Immobilizer

To protect against theft, your vehicle is equipped with an electronic immobilizer.

Your immobilizer system consists of a small transponder in the ignition key and electronic components in the vehicle.

Vehicles without smart key system

Whenever you insert the ignition key into the ignition lock and turn it to the ON position, the immobilizer checks whether the ignition key is a valid key.

Whenever the ENGINE START/STOP button is pressed to the ON position, the immobilizer checks whether the ignition key is the correct key.

Set the ENGINE START/STOP button to the OFF position (Australia). The immobilizer system is automatically activated. With the valid Smart Key removed, the engine cannot be started.

WARNING

To prevent vehicle theft, do not leave spare keys anywhere in the vehicle. The immobilizer access code is a customer-specific personal password that should be kept secret. Do not keep this code anywhere in the vehicle.

WARNING

When starting the engine, do not keep other vehicle keys with a transponder within the range of the ignition switch. Otherwise, the engine may not start or may stall after starting. Keep the keys separated to avoid starting problems.

Do not install metal accessories near the ignition switch. Metal accessories can interrupt the transmitter signals and prevent the engine from starting.

The transponder in your ignition key is an important component of the immobilizer system. It is designed to operate trouble-free for years. However, avoid exposing it to moisture, electrostatic discharge, or rough handling. This could lead to an immobilizer malfunction.

Do not modify or adjust the immobilizer system, as this could damage it. In this case, have the system checked by an authorized dealer. Kia recommends a visit to a Kia dealer or service partner.
