Starting the Diesel Engine
To start a diesel engine when cold, preheat it before cranking, and warm it up before starting to drive.
1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Manual transmission: Fully depress the clutch pedal and shift the transmission into neutral. Keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed while pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button to the START position.
Automatic transmission / DCT*: Place the shift lever in P (Park). Fully depress the brake pedal.
You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in N (Neutral).

3. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button while depressing the brake pedal.
4. Continue to depress the brake pedal until the glow indicator turns off (approximately 5 seconds).
5. The engine starts when the glow indicator turns off.
✽ NOTICE
If the ENGINE START/STOP button is pressed again while the engine is preheating, the engine may start.
Starting and Stopping the Engine for Turbocharger and Intercooler
1. Do not rev or accelerate the engine immediately after starting.
If the engine is cold, run it at idle for a few seconds until sufficient lubrication is provided to the turbocharger unit.
2. After high-speed or prolonged driving, or heavy load operation, let the engine idle for approximately 1 minute before turning it off.
This idle time allows the turbocharger to cool down before the engine is shut off.
CAUTION
Do not turn off the engine immediately after it has been under heavy load. This may cause serious damage to the engine or turbocharger unit.
- Even if the Smart Key is inside the vehicle, the engine may not start if the Smart Key is too far from you.
- When the ENGINE START/STOP button is in ACC or ON position, if any door is opened, the system checks for the Smart Key. If the Smart Key is not in the vehicle, the "Key Not In Vehicle" message will appear on the LCD display. If all doors are closed, the chime will sound for 5 seconds. The indicator or warning turns off when the vehicle is moving. Always keep the Smart Key with you.
WARNING
The engine will start only when the smart key is inside the vehicle.
Never allow children or anyone unfamiliar with the vehicle to touch the ENGINE START/STOP button or related parts.
CAUTION
If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not attempt to shift the shift lever to P (Park). If traffic and road conditions permit, you may shift the lever to N (Neutral) while the vehicle is moving and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to try restarting the engine.

✽ NOTICE
- If the battery is discharged or the Smart Key is not working properly, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button with the Smart Key. The button side with the lock must face directly toward the ENGINE START/STOP button and the Smart Key must be held at a right angle to the direction of the button.
- When the stop lamp fuse is blown, the engine cannot be started normally.
Replace the fuse with a new one. If this is not possible, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button for up to 10 seconds while in the ACC position. The engine can be started without depressing the brake pedal. However, for your safety, always depress the brake pedal before starting the engine.
CAUTION
Do not press the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 10 seconds, except when the stop lamp fuse is blown.
