If the engine does not crank or cranks slowly

  1. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, make sure the gear selector lever is in N (Neutral) or P (Park), and that the parking brake is applied.
  2. Check the battery connections to make sure they are clean and tight.
  3. Turn on the map lamp. If the light is dim or goes out when you engage the starter, the battery is discharged.
  4. Check the starter connections and make sure they are tight.
  5. Do not push or tow the vehicle to try to start it. See the instructions for "Jump Starting".
WARNING

If the engine does not start, do not push or tow the vehicle to start it. This could cause a collision or other damage. In addition, starting the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle may overheat the catalytic converter and create a fire hazard.

If the engine cranks normally but does not start

  1. Check the fuel level.
  2. With the ignition key in LOCK, check all connectors at the ignition coils and spark plugs.

Reconnect any disconnected or loose connections.

  • Check the fuel supply line in the engine compartment.
  • If the engine still will not start, contact an authorized Kia dealer or seek qualified assistance.
