If the Engine Overheats

If the temperature warning light indicates overheating, the vehicle loses power, or you hear loud knocking or pinging, the engine is probably too hot.

In this case:

   Pull over to the side of the road as soon as it is safe to do so.

   Shift the gear selector to P (automatic transmission) or neutral (manual transmission) and apply the parking brake. If the air conditioner is on, turn it off.

   If coolant is dripping under the vehicle or steam is escaping from under the hood, turn off the engine. Do not open the hood while coolant is leaking or steam is escaping. If there are no signs of coolant loss or steam, let the engine cool, then check whether the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan is not operating, turn off the engine.

   Check that the water pump drive belt is properly tensioned. If the belt appears to be in good condition, check for leaks at the radiator, hoses, or under the vehicle (if the air conditioner is operating, it is normal for cold water to drain under the vehicle when it is stopped).

When the engine is running, keep your hands, hair, and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and belts to avoid injury.

5. If the water pump belt is broken or coolant is leaking, turn off the engine immediately and contact the nearest authorized Kia dealer for assistance.

Do not remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Hot pressurized coolant can cause serious burns.

   If you cannot find the cause of the overheating, wait for the engine to return to normal temperature, then, if coolant has been lost, carefully add coolant to the reservoir until the level reaches the middle mark on the reservoir.

   Drive carefully and watch for signs of overheating. If the engine overheats again, seek assistance from an authorized Kia dealer.

A significant loss of coolant means there is a leak in the cooling system. This should be checked by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.
