Steering Wheel

Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The power steering system uses an electric motor to assist you in steering the vehicle. If the engine is off or the power steering system fails, the vehicle can still be steered, but more effort will be required on the steering wheel.

The electric power steering is controlled by the power steering control unit, which determines the torque on the steering wheel and the vehicle speed to control the motor.

Steering becomes heavier as vehicle speed increases and lighter as vehicle speed decreases, for optimal steering control.

If you notice any change in the effort required to steer during normal operation, have the power steering system checked by an authorized Kia dealer.

  • Noise may be heard when steering at low temperatures. If the temperature rises, the noise will most likely disappear. This is normal.
  • When the vehicle is stationary and the steering wheel is held fully turned to the left or right, the steering wheel becomes harder to turn. Assist power is limited to protect the motor from overheating.

Over time, the steering wheel will return to normal.

✽ NOTICE

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • The EPS warning light does not illuminate.
  • The steering wheel becomes heavy immediately after turning the ignition switch to ON. This occurs while the EPS system performs a self-diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will return to normal.
  • A clicking sound may be heard from the EPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK (OFF) position.
  • Engine noise may be heard when the vehicle is stopped or moving at low vehicle speed.
  • If the electronic power steering (EPS) system does not operate normally, the warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The steering wheel may become difficult to control or operate abnormally. Take your vehicle to an authorized Kia dealer and have the system checked as soon as possible.
  • When the charging system warning light illuminates due to low voltage (when the alternator or battery is not operating normally or is faulty), steering effort may increase.
