Description and Operation

Description

The Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) system prevents particulate matter (PM) from being released into the atmosphere and consists of the filter assembly and two exhaust gas temperature sensors (EGTS). The filter is integrated into the catalytic converter assembly and has a honeycomb cell structure that can filter PM from the exhaust gas. As the exhaust gas passes through the GPF, the PM collected in the GPF is called "soot".

Repair Procedures

GPF Regeneration

This procedure consists of forced regeneration of the GPF using a scan tool when the GPF has not regenerated during driving. For example, if the vehicle has been driven at low speed or over short distances repeatedly, the GPF regeneration procedure cannot proceed because the "Regeneration Mode" is not activated.Forced Regeneration Condition
  • Engine coolant temperature: approx. 70 °C
  • Engine at idle
  • P range (A/T) or Neutral (M/T)
  • Battery voltage normal
  • Apply the full electrical load (A/C on if equipped, blower on maximum speed, headlights on, wipers on, other lamps on, etc.).
  1. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Connect the KDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Turn the ignition on.
  4. Select "Vehicle, Model Year, Engine, System".
  5. Start the engine and idle in P range (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).
  6. Apply the full electrical load to the vehicle (A/C on, blower on maximum speed, headlights on, wipers on, other lamps on, etc.).
  7. Select "Vehicle Software Management".
  8. Select "GPF Service Regeneration".

Removal and Installation

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Remove the exhaust gas temperature sensor (EGTS) No. 1 and No. 2. (Refer to Engine Control/Fuel System - "Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS)").
  3. Remove the GPF (C) after removing the mounting nuts.

    GPF installation nut: 39.2–59 N·m

  4. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Replacement

  8. Select "Reset Adaptive Values after GPF Replacement".
